North Shore-LIJ Completes Last Phase of $50M Upgrade of its Diagnostic Imaging Systems, $12M for GE Low-Dose CT Scanners to Reduce Patients Radiation Exposure
Great Neck, NY (PRWEB) January 14, 2014
The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that it completed the last phase of a $ 50 million, three-year project to upgrade its diagnostic imaging systems. The final phase cost $ 12 million and included installing 15 computed tomography (CT) scanners at its healthcare facilities in the metropolitan area to reduce patients’ exposure to radiation and provide the highest quality imaging.
CT technology is a critical tool for diagnosis and early detection of cancers, cardiac disease, neurological problems, trauma, inflammation and other conditions.
Last June, North Shore-LIJ announced at a news conference its purchase of 15 GE low dose CT scanners for 10 of its facilities on Long Island and in New York City. This initiative was part of the first, $ 50 million step in an on-going effort by the health system to replace or update all of its conventional diagnostic imaging systems through quality initiatives designed to assure cutting edge technological capabilities while also assuring patient safety. In addition to the equipment, North Shore-LIJ also installed system-wide monitoring software, which tracks radiation exposure by CT, creating a database that monitors levels of emission and helps radiologists adjust their practices based on the latest clinical evidence.
“North Shore-LIJ is one of the first health systems in the country to replace or upgrade all of its diagnostic imaging equipment to reduce patients’ risks to radiation exposure,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “This initiative is a significant investment in our commitment to move beyond treating illness but also to protect public health.”
The Joint Commission, the nation’s top hospital and healthcare accrediting organization, issued a sentinel alert about the long-term radiation risks of diagnostic imaging in 2011. Jason Naidich, MD, chairman of radiology at North Shore-LIJ, said the health system was already planning its major project to upgrade its CTs and radiology equipment when the report made national news.
“North Shore-LIJ has a comprehensive radiology safety program across its hospitals and outpatient imaging facilities,” Dr. Naidich said. “Our radiology physicians, technologists, and physicists are specifically trained in radiation safety and are committed to limiting patients’ exposure to the lowest dose necessary to make the proper diagnosis.
“We offer low-dose CT imaging in every community the health system serves and all of our emergency departments are equipped with the most-up-to-date, low-dose CT scanners,” Dr. Naidich said. “This is important for everyone, but especially for children and young adults who may be more susceptible to harm from radiation exposure over time.”
“When used appropriately, CT is a safe tool that can save lives. At North Shore – LIJ, our patients can be confident that we are using this innovative technology to make their imaging procedures even safer.”

PDFTron Systems, a leading software developer specializing in PDF, SVG, and PostScript technologies, announced the release of a new update to PDFNet SDK (v.2.6). The new release focuses on improved compression in PDFNet SDK, utilizing the latest and most advanced compression technologies available on the market, such as JPEG2000 and JBIG2.
PDFNet SDK is a high-quality, industry-strength PDF library meeting requirements of the most demanding and diverse applications. PDFNet SDK gives software developers a comprehensive PDF toolkit with a variety of options for PDF document manipulation. Using PDFNet you can write stand-alone, cross-platform and reliable commercial applications that can read, write, edit, print and display PDF documents. PDFNet is available as a 100%.Net component that can be used from any .Net language (e.g. C#, VB, and J#) and as a cross-platform C/C++ library.
The new release features a brand new high-performance, high-quality JPEG2000 engine which can be used to decode and process any JP2 embedded stream in PDF. The JPEG2000 filter (introduced in PDF 1.5) decodes data that has been encoded using the JPEG2000 compression method, an international standard for the compression and packaging of image data. JPEG2000 defines a wavelet-based method for image compression that can give better size reduction than other methods such as regular JPEG or CCITT.
In addition to enhanced JPEG2000 decoder support, the PDFNet toolkit also features new JBIG2 decompression support. All PDFNet users can now decode and preview monochrome (1 bit per pixel) images created using the PDFNet library. JBIG2 provides considerably better compression than the existing CCITT standard. Images of pages containing text in any language compress particularly well, with typical compression ratios of 20:1 to 50:1 for a page full of text. PDFNet has been supporting lossless and lossy JBIG2 encoding in previous product releases for more than a year.
Another enhancement to the PDFNet library includes improved font substitution using all available fonts. This means that PDF documents with missing fonts (i.e. fonts that are not embedded) will render more accurately in the PDF rasterizer/viewer.
Other customer-driven enhancements include numerous bug fixes, new sample code projects and other incremental improvements.
For a comprehensive listing of features available in PDFNet, please have a look at our PDFNet Feature Chart at: http://www.pdftron.com/net/features.html.

Scott Security Systems and SecurTek Join Forces to Better Serve Vancouver and Lower Mainland Customers
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) January 07, 2014
It turns out their timing was perfect, according to Scott Security Systems President, Scott Granger.
“We had been exploring ways to take our company to the next level in an extremely competitive and rapidly expanding industry. We had come to the conclusion a partner with the right capacity, access to emerging technologies and a strong national presence was required. That partner would have to be willing not only to invest in our vision, but also had to have the resources to fully support it,” Granger noted.
“As a result of our search,” Granger explains, “SecurTek made arrangements to fly out and introduce themselves. We each liked what we saw and ultimately a deal was struck. Saskatchewan-based SecurTek became that critical partner that would carry us into the future by making it possible for us to keep focusing on what we do best: service, sales and installations.”
Granger soon realized the extent of SecurTek’s commitment to growing its market presence locally, and the vast range of monitoring technologies at its disposal: “They offer exclusive new video, lone worker and access control monitoring. They have integrated technologies that make alarm verification easier and ensure more effective responses in emergency situations.” Granger adds: “while the details of our agreement were being finalized, SecurTek was already training us on their latest Videofied wireless cameras, popular on construction sites and at locations with copper theft problems.”
SecurTek President and CEO Darrell Jones pointed out that SecurTek takes great pride in the relationship it enjoys with its network of independently-owned authorized dealers, noting that Scott Security Systems is an ideal fit and addition to this network:
“Unlike many of the large international monitoring companies, SecurTek does not operate its own installation division. We rely on the knowledge of the local expert dealers who are well aware of the prevailing safety and security concerns in their communities. That is why making our monitoring resources available to Scott Security Systems seemed mutually desirable from all angles. We believe that ultimately, it is the customer who will enjoy the benefits that stem from this strategic alliance.”
Jones also adds that as Vancouver’s Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley neighbourhoods evolve, so do the methods and required approaches needed to keep the people and their valuables safe. Going forward, SecurTek and Scott Security Systems working together makes this goal more easily achievable.
About Scott Security Systems:
Scott Security Systems is a well-respected and trustworthy company which has provided electronic security systems, video surveillance systems and access control to the Vancouver and Lower Mainland marketplace since 1978. BearCom Opens Network Operations Center to Offer Continuous Monitoring of Customer Communications Systems
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) December 19, 2013
BearCom, a nationwide provider of wireless communications equipment and solutions, today announced the opening of its Network Operations Center (NOC), which can alert BearCom’s enterprise customers to problems with their digital communications systems and help them optimize those systems for maximum efficiency.
“Wireless communications systems are vital to the safe operation of all kinds of business and governmental organizations,” said BearCom President & CEO Jerry Denham. “These systems can not only save money, they can save lives.” Denham added, “It was with this in mind that we created our new Network Operations Center to monitor our customers’ systems.”
Modern two-way radios rely on base stations and repeaters to relay voice communications from one radio to the others. If these pieces of the infrastructure develop problems, the operation of the entire system can be compromised. In a typical on-site service call, a technician connects a computer to the system and uses special software to conduct an assessment.
“With the NOC, we can offer what we call Constant Service Presence to detect any issues, evaluate problems, and even dispatch technicians if that’s warranted,” Denham said. “We’re already using Constant Service Presence to help monitor systems we’ve built for customers who look to us for two-way radio rentals, and we look forward to offering this unique service to more of our customers around the country.” The BearCom NOC can monitor customers’ Motorola MOTOTRBO systems around the clock and provide system diagnostics, real-time visibility, and proactive response to any issues that arise. Alarms are transmitted by e-mail for resolution, which can be accomplished by BearCom or by technicians on-site.
“Using the NOC allows us to collect metrics on such things as repeater health, network latency, and channel efficiencies,” said Ian Torok, Director of Technical Services at BearCom. “Not only can we detect problems, the NOC gives us the visibility to optimize systems in a way that maximizes efficiency.”
Torok noted that to open the NOC, BearCom invested not just in the software that assists in the monitoring, but in augmenting the company’s own information technology infrastructure to make certain that a secure network connection is always available. “The most important benefit of our new Network Operations Center is the peace of mind it will give our customers,” he said. “They no longer have to determine outages and report them. We know about any problems, and we know about them early. Since these kinds of issues typically escalate over time, it’s important to be made aware of them as soon as they arise.”
Constant Service Presence can be added to BearCom’s existing services or arranged along with dispatched repair services as part of a service-level agreement.
BearCom provides a broad line of high-performance wireless communications products, services, and complete mobility solutions. Founded in 1981, BearCom is America's only nationwide dealer and integrator of wireless communications equipment, serves customers from 26 branch offices located throughout the U.S., has several affiliated offices around the world, and employs approximately 400 people. BearCom is headquartered in the Dallas, Texas area. For more information, visit http://www.BearCom.com.
