Ben Long, senior graphic designer for internet marketing agency Brandwidth , recently collaborated with several artists to design and paint an aerosol mural of former local photographer and DJ Mpozi Mshale Tolbert. Friends of Mpozi made plans for a tribute mural after his death in 1996 and asked Long to bring their vision to life on the wall outside Spin Nightclub in Broad Ripple Village.

"My strength as an artist and designer is making a vision come to life," Long said. "It's all visual problem solving. When I paint a mural or work with Brandwidth clients on logo or website design, I learn all I can about what style or theme the individual or company is looking for first as well as what they're passionate about."

Long said he was honored to be part of the Mpozi tribute. The latest mural is part of a larger body of work including pieces in New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Boston, Louisville, Kansas City and St. Louis. Long also was recently commissioned to do a mural in L.A. Locally, Long has painted murals at the Eiteljorg Museum, The Great Frame Up and at Caring Place, which is one of the largest murals in Indianapolis.

"Keeping the theme, audience and demographics in mind, I aim to create a new approach to something familiar - even on things that have been done a thousand times," Long said. "Painting and Design are similar processes with different sets of problems to consider such as the effective use of time and space to make the vision a reality."
