FreeBSD Unveils Latest FreeBSD Operating System Release

This week, the FreeBSD Project released version 5.4 of the FreeBSD operating system. This new release offers new features, new tools, and numerous improvements in security, hardware and networking support for the UNIX-like operating system.

The FreeBSD release supports various hardware architectures including HP/Compaq Alpha systems, AMD's AMD64, Intel EM64T, Intel IA-64 (Itanium), NEC PC-98x1, UltraSPARC, and standard Intel x86 compatible hardware.

"This release builds on the success of the FreeBSD 5 series and includes several new features including significantly improved support for systems with more than 4GB of RAM for both 32-bit and 64-bit Intel and AMD systems," said Scott Long, member of the FreeBSD Release Engineering team.

"And many stability and performance improvements were made to the network stack, drivers, and services, the power management subsystem, and the Linux emulation subsystem," said Long.

New hardware supported by this release includes GPIB-PCIIA IEEE-488 cards, USB Communication Device Class (CDC) ethernet devices, Areca SATA II RAID controllers, and the HighPoint's RocketRAID 182x series ATA RAID controller.

The release also provides new support for natively running many Windows 64-bit NDIS (network) drivers on the AMD64 platform and improved performance and support for the LSI MegaRAID and Adaptec ServeRAID adapters.

A CPU frequency control framework has been added for adjusting Intel SpeedStep for ICH, Intel Enhanced SpeedStep, and ACPI CPU performance states.

FreeBSD 5.4 enhances its high availability and load balancing support by adding Common Address Redundancy Protocol (CARP) for allowing multiple hosts to share IP addresses.

And the IPv4 IPsec implementation now supports the TCP-MD5 extension for enhanced security.

New tools included with the base install of FreeBSD are netcat, for various manual TCP and UDP tasks, and tcpdrop, for dropping TCP sessions.

The FreeBSD release also includes various software updates including BIND, Heimdal Kerberos, OpenSSL, and Sendmail. And the third-party software packages collection has numerous updates including to KDE, GNOME, and the X.org X Window System.

HealthLeaders Media and Bank of America Merrill Lynch Release New Report in “Executive Insight” Project

It is the third installment of a four-part series, consisting of quarterly buzz surveys on industry topics, Executive Insight reports analyzing the results of each survey and executive Roundtable discussions with senior finance executives from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and top provider organizations.

The report Top Skills for Top Executives analyzes the results of this months buzz survey, in which senior leaders from hospitals, health systems, physician organizations and other groups were asked to rank the importance of executive skills and about their willingness to seek outside resources. A total of 153 completed surveys are included in the analysis, which included 58 Senior Leaders.

"Clearly, leaders in the healthcare industry feel that in this time of acquiring, divesting, merging and blending, job No. 1 is adaptability and a strong vision for their organization," says John Hesselmann, Specialized Industries executive at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Part of the companys Global Commercial Banking business, Specialized Industries provides healthcare clients with solutions such as core credit and treasury management, and also helps provide leasing, retirement capabilities and other capital-raising products.

In one of the unexpected takeaways of the survey, the report reveals a preference for so-called "soft" skills over subject expertise; a majority of healthcare leaders cite communication as the most important skill for an executive in the healthcare industry-- above medical training, technical knowledge, and even the ability to understand health reform. Also topping the list of executive skills is a vision for transformative cultural change and an ability to set the course for that change.

Seeking external guidance and outsourcing expertise continue to be common leadership practices. Among the top external resources sought by executives are legal services and technology consultants.

"If executives can do something less expensively by hiring a tech consultant, or preserve liquidity by not making a capital investment in information technology, it makes sense to outsource those things," says Charles Alston, senior vice president and market executive for healthcare at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Respondents were also asked to reflect on their key motivators for financial expertise. The common theme was preparation: long-term financial strategic and capital planning. In todays healthcare climate, it has become increasingly essential to understand all possible scenarios related to healthcare reform and market shifts that could impact the cost of capital.

The report features an executive spotlight with Kenneth Semmet, President and CEO of MedStar Health, a 10-hospital system serving the Baltimore-Washington area. Semmet helms a patient-focused initiative called MedStar 2020, which plots a transition from acute episodic care to integrated but widely distributed care. The program is rooted in the ideologies of philanthropy and effective communication.

"We often think of communication as speaking, but I also think theres a great opportunity in listening. Our associates have significant ideas about how we can evolve, and we have to create the right structure in the organization to allow them to be heard," says Semmet.

GuardRFID and AppLocation jointly release a combined Active RFID and Wide Area GPS/Cellular Gateway for In-Transit Visibility and Security of Assets and People

Guard RFID Solutions Inc. and AppLocation Systems Inc. jointly announced the release of their Mobile Active RFID Gateway that combines GuardRFIDs Active RFID Readers and GPS/Cellular Gateways to provide real-time tracking and location capability for tagged items and people while in transit within a vehicle. The Gateway also supports the J1939 interface that can alert maintenance staff of active engine faults, track fuel economy, and provide maintenance notifications by mileage, time or engine hours.

AppLocations MobileFusion platform is integrated with GuardRFIDs Argus AllGuard server to collect tag data for generating reports and providing graphical views of the location and details of tagged items and personnel. By adding in-vehicle gateways to fixed facility RFID deployments, companies can now extend their chain of custody reporting and verification to include in-transit segments and delivery locations. In addition, personnel status and location can be achieved by utilizing GuardRFIDs Staff Tags.
