Does Latest Book Cover Award Winner Signal New Trend in Indie Publishing?

Burlington, WI (PRWEB) August 14, 2012 announced winners for its July eBook Cover Design Awards on August 12. The fiction winner, selected from over one hundred entries, was Afterlife by indie science fiction author Eric Kent Edstrom.

Award judge Tamara Deaver, owner of TLC Graphics in Austin, TX called the cover ". . . simply stunning, full of depth, great use of typography, and very unique."

The publishing industry experienced a tidal shift when mega retailer announced their KDP self-publishing platform in 2010. It opened the floodgates for indie authors, many of whom were not finding success through traditional routes.

"There was a novelty to ereader devices like the Kindle back then," Edstrom says. "People were chomping at the bit to find more content. Indie writers could release cheap ebooks with lousy covers and still sell thousands of copies a month. That's over now. We're back to judging a book by its cover."

Top selling fantasy author Moses Siregar III agrees. His highly acclaimed first novel, The Black God's War, was an early standout among indie books, both for its tight storytelling and its cover. The novel has been a fixture on Amazon's top 100 fantasy lists since its release last summer. "A great cover is something you'll take pride in and something your readers will appreciate," says Siregar. He advises indie authors to, "Put the same love into the cover that you put into your book, because that's how you begin to sell your book to the world."

Though Edstrom welcomes the recognition his book has received due to the award, he'd prefer people focus on the story. "I consider myself a professional writer. I work hard on the craft of storytelling. I invest insane amounts of time in editing and rewriting." Edstrom was quick to give credit to the cover designer, Netherlands based Melvin De Voor. "I was lucky to find him. But the truth is, if you're going to compete, you have to be willing invest the time to search out the best collaborators. They're out there, and you don't necessarily have to take out a second mortgage to get first class work."

Siregar reiterated that point. "It's possible to spend hundreds, not thousands, on an immaculate cover. Of course, the most important thing is to tell a great story."

Californian Librarians Announce Launch of Online Publishing Empire, Minute Help

Anaheim, California (PRWEB) May 01, 2012

Spider Robinsons famous phrase, Librarians are the secret masters of the world certainly rings true for Roland Lomeli and Scott La Counte. The pair met during their time as desk attendants at a local Anaheim reference library and, upon becoming victims of the States 2010 financial cutbacks, hatched an un-thwartable plan to launch a refreshing twist on the traditional publishing house.

From our time as librarians we became aware that, in this day and age, people want to access information quickly and with minimum hassle says Lomeli, a Linguistics Graduate.

He continues, We both noticed that people often wanted guide books that taught them everything they needed to know on a particular subject in just an hour or two. So, we decided this would form the basis of the books our new publishing house would focus on.

The result is Minute Help Press, a publishing house with a sole focus on electronic eBooks that act as a life-saving grace to those wanting quick and snappy information.

La Counte, who had already published two massively popular eBooks of his own, discusses the booming success the pair has experienced:

It went faster than we could ever imagine. We originally aimed to publish three new eBooks a month. A year and a half later we are publishing around 30 news books a month with an inventory of over 200 titles across numerous different subjects he explains.

Talking to the pair is a demonstration of cool and calm modesty. However, they have a lot to celebrate. Over 80,000 individual books have been sold, with one of their iPad 2 guides reaching best seller status on iBooks in just one week.

Being an independent publisher, says Lomeli, Gives us the freedom of saving money by doing editing, marketing and distribution ourselves. We pass that savings onto our readers by giving them books that publishers would charge 10 times the price for.

Lomeli went on to explain that while the big six argue about the agency model, independent publishers have come up from behind by doing everything themselves, Competition is fierce, but eBooks have created a platform where small publishers can actually compete he adds.

If their recent success wasnt enough, the duo has big plans for the future. They are already rapidly increasing the volume of books they publish on a monthly basis and, with demand from the market for physical books, Lomeli and La Counte are currently converting some of their electronic masterpieces into paperback perfections perfect for those whod prefer a real book.

Noteflight’s New Sheet Music Publishing Service Targets iPad, Smartphones, HTML5

Cambridge, Ma (PRWEB) March 14, 2012

March 12, 2012 Cambridge, MA -- Noteflight, LLC (, developer of innovative online music notation software, today announced the release of Noteflight Publishing Service, a cloud-based server platform that manages digital sheet music assets and delivers interactive musical content to tablets, smartphones, HTML5 browsers and the Noteflight Score Editor. The service is aimed at publishers, institutions and distributors of sheet music, and is available for use under a variety of flexible licensing arrangements.

Noteflight Publishing Service (NPS) is a cloud-based service which converts digital music files into graphics and audio on the server side, using Noteflight's music layout engine. NPS then delivers the results to authorized users, formatted on the fly according to their needs. It harnesses the advantage of the computing cloud, freeing content owners from the need to manage their musical assets and generate them in a huge variety of file formats. Scores may be provided as MusicXML files or sourced from Noteflight's innovative online score editing website

Most other digital sheet music systems work by magnifying or shrinking the original printed pages of a score to fit a device's screen, which results in music that is hard to read and play along with on a tablet or a web browser. In contrast, NPS automatically lays out a score's notes, measures and staves in a way that is sized and formatted for any application -- whether on a smartphone, a tablet, or a large screen. NPS can also provide sheet music in the best data format for viewing
