North Shore-LIJ Completes Last Phase of $50M Upgrade of its Diagnostic Imaging Systems, $12M for GE Low-Dose CT Scanners to Reduce Patients Radiation Exposure

Great Neck, NY (PRWEB) January 14, 2014

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that it completed the last phase of a $ 50 million, three-year project to upgrade its diagnostic imaging systems. The final phase cost $ 12 million and included installing 15 computed tomography (CT) scanners at its healthcare facilities in the metropolitan area to reduce patients’ exposure to radiation and provide the highest quality imaging.

CT technology is a critical tool for diagnosis and early detection of cancers, cardiac disease, neurological problems, trauma, inflammation and other conditions.

Last June, North Shore-LIJ announced at a news conference its purchase of 15 GE low dose CT scanners for 10 of its facilities on Long Island and in New York City. This initiative was part of the first, $ 50 million step in an on-going effort by the health system to replace or update all of its conventional diagnostic imaging systems through quality initiatives designed to assure cutting edge technological capabilities while also assuring patient safety. In addition to the equipment, North Shore-LIJ also installed system-wide monitoring software, which tracks radiation exposure by CT, creating a database that monitors levels of emission and helps radiologists adjust their practices based on the latest clinical evidence.

“North Shore-LIJ is one of the first health systems in the country to replace or upgrade all of its diagnostic imaging equipment to reduce patients’ risks to radiation exposure,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “This initiative is a significant investment in our commitment to move beyond treating illness but also to protect public health.”

The Joint Commission, the nation’s top hospital and healthcare accrediting organization, issued a sentinel alert about the long-term radiation risks of diagnostic imaging in 2011. Jason Naidich, MD, chairman of radiology at North Shore-LIJ, said the health system was already planning its major project to upgrade its CTs and radiology equipment when the report made national news.

“North Shore-LIJ has a comprehensive radiology safety program across its hospitals and outpatient imaging facilities,” Dr. Naidich said. “Our radiology physicians, technologists, and physicists are specifically trained in radiation safety and are committed to limiting patients’ exposure to the lowest dose necessary to make the proper diagnosis.

“We offer low-dose CT imaging in every community the health system serves and all of our emergency departments are equipped with the most-up-to-date, low-dose CT scanners,” Dr. Naidich said. “This is important for everyone, but especially for children and young adults who may be more susceptible to harm from radiation exposure over time.”

“When used appropriately, CT is a safe tool that can save lives. At North Shore – LIJ, our patients can be confident that we are using this innovative technology to make their imaging procedures even safer.”

SPECT Imaging in the Spotlight as Treatment of Trauma is Reviewed

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 20, 2012

As part of an 8 part investigative series, the Denver Post published an article this weekend about how children who are neglected or abused during adolescence are more likely to have brain and body abnormalities in adulthood. The article explains that Children who are beaten, starved or abandoned are likely to suffer emotional trauma so severe that it can impair the way their bodies and brains grow up and, if never addressed, cause lifelong health problems. The article goes on to discuss some of the newest research in treating neglected and abused children. Dr. Bruce Perry, a researcher at ChildTrauma Academy in Houston, Texas, explains that many of these children are misdiagnosed with a mental disorder when in reality the problem is a manifestation of trauma. With the help of Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) brain imaging, doctors can determine if these children are suffering from a mental disorder or a brain abnormality due to the trauma sustained. As a result of the brain scan, doctors were able to put these children on a more precise treatment regimen that had them in care for a shorter amount of time. The article also tells the story of Grant Oakes, a man who became the legal guardian of his grandson after the childs mother, a known drug user, was abused by her partner in front of him. As the child reached his teens, the child began using marijuana, skipping school and eventually threatening suicide. With the help of SPECT brain imaging at CereScan, Oakes grandson was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and is now on a mood-stabilizing medication. The family says they have seen improvements in his behavior. SPECT scans can help answer questions that families and caregivers of children who have been abused consistently ask. While these scans can be pricey, they may ultimately save money, for both caregivers and the government, by diagnosing the problem earlier and avoiding therapy on a trial and error basis. "I love this kid, but we went through hell and back," Oakes said. "If we would do these scans and get people help much earlier, then there would be so much money saved in the court system and in doctor visits, not to mention avoiding the grief that people go through."

Advocate Condell Patient, Doctors, Associates Celebrate Breast Imaging Accreditation By American College of Radiology

Libertyville, IL (PRWEB) April 26, 2012

Beverly Tuhy has something to celebrate.

The 71-year-old Mundelein resident recently passed an important milestone in her battle against breast cancer: Shes been free of the disease for five years.

Tuhy was treated for breast cancer at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. She joined her doctors, nurses and the hospitals administrators and other associates to mark a recent accreditation by the American College of Radiology, which has designated Condell a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

For Tuhy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram revealed a small lump, the honor comes as no surprise.

The day she got the news, I sat with Monica (Rettig, RN, Advocate Condells Breast Health Specialist) and she held my hand. I said, What do I do now?

I was in shock, Tuhy told a crowd of more than 50 gathered for an award presentation last week. But I walked out of there feeling empowered, like it was going to be OK, Tuhy said. And each time I came back, I was greeted with a warm smile and made to feel comfortable. The staff became like a second family, and they took care of me like I was family. And Im honored to celebrate with them today.

The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the Colleges voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

The breast imaging services at Advocate Condell are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

We invested a lot of time, talent and energy into attaining Center of Excellence designation, so were pleased with the outcome, said Dr. Louis Manquen, Medical Chair of Advocate Condells Breast Center.

Two years in the making, the award is just the first of many, Manquen told associates last week. And Breast Center associates are ready for what comes next.

This has been one of the best team efforts with which I have ever had the pleasure to be involved, said Norma Johnson on behalf of the Breast Center staff. Our administration, who have been so encouraging and faithful in seeing this process through; our excellent group of radiologists, pathologists, physicians and nurses; our dedicated and skilled mammographers and ultrasound techs; our tirelessly helpful registration personnel and volunteers; our knowledgeable PACS administrators; and the physicists and clinical engineers who keep us up and running --- they all played a role. I also want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the other Advocate Breast Centers for their patience with multiple phone calls, emails and questions. Their participation certainly contributed to our success, she added.

To have acquired this recognition puts us in an elite group of facilities that have complied with the rigorous standards set forth by the American College of Radiology, Johnson added. We are able to offer our community the highest standards of breast cancer detection and care. We are proud and happy to say today, we are a breast imaging center of excellence.

Advocate Condell Medical Center Vice President of Professional Services Airica Steed added: This accomplishment demonstrates our relentless commitment to excellence in breast health, beginning with prevention and early detection and continuing throughout the continuum of care. It is our vision to continue to elevate the center to new heights and to be recognized as a comprehensive center of excellence in the community.

Custom Wallpaper Murals by Gamma Imaging Help Turn Panasonic’s New Robotics Headquarters into High-Tech Showplace

Custom Wallpaper Murals by Gamma Imaging Help Turn Panasonic's New Robotics Headquarters into High-Tech Showplace

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) December 13, 2006

Panasonic Factory Solutions receives a steady flow of visitors to the extensive research and training facility at its new location in Buffalo Grove. Before opening the facility, the company retained Comply Enterprises, a full service B. to B. marketing communications agency located in Naperville, Illinois, to design a memorable interior display environment that would communicate the nature and sophistication of the Company's core technologies. Comply Enterprises enlisted the expertise of Gamma Imaging to bring their custom digital wallpaper designs to life.

Remarkably, Gamma was able to produce and install 4,000 feet of custom digital wallpaper, plus a variety of vinyl banners, cloth banners and backlit lightboxes in under 6 weeks. The results exceeded both Comply's and Panasonic's expectations.

"We decided to work with Gamma because of their reputation for quality, value and reliability," said Kelly O'Brien, President of Comply Enterprises. "Not only did they live up to that reputation, they got the entire project done within a very tight timeframe." O'Brien said the company receives many compliments on the wallcovering installations. "The digital wallscapes are so big and stunning, almost everyone comments on them," O'Brien continued. "They really add to a visitor's overall experience at the facility."

Gamma installed the digital wallpaper in various locations throughout the facility, from the employee entrance to demonstration areas. The largest of the wallpaper murals was installed over two days on a curved wall 44' long and 21' high. Two doors in this wall also had to be covered, for a seamless display.

Gamma encountered another challenging surface in the round circular conference room. The dimension of the circular wall was 67' long by 8' high. Once installed and illuminated by ceiling lights, the conference room's wallpaper murals provide a memorable visual experience.

To meet all fire safety and heat detection codes, Gamma used commercial grade type II vinyl wallpaper. The material is washable, fade-resistant, and easy to maintain. The high resolution images were printed onto the vinyl using Gamma's large-format Vutek printing system and solvent-based inks.

In addition to the vinyl wallcoverings, Gamma also produced large vinyl banners, cloth banners and backlit Duratrans graphics mounted in light boxes. The largest of the vinyl banners was printed on 46' x 15' mesh banner material, and makes a visual statement almost as strong as the digital wallpaper. Fabric banners were printed on polywoven artist premium light canvas. Eye-popping 20" x 24" Duratrans are situated in light boxes throughout the facilities. Most prominent are the six light boxes located in the front lobby. They offer a brilliantly colored view of Panasonic's world-leading electronics assembly solutions.

"We're very proud of our installations at Panasonic," said Doug Goddard, President of Gamma Imaging. "They presented the kind of challenge we love doing state-of-the-art work for a state-of-the-art client."

In the retail arena, Gamma is producing digital wallpaper murals for Sarpino's, a world-wide chain of Italian restaurants. At Sarpino's restaurant in Chicago, Gamma recently installed a 31' x 7' mural depicting many of the restaurant's menu options in brilliant, mouth-watering color.

Gamma is also creating large-format digital wall treatments for the grand opening of Gateway Gifts, Inc., a retail gift outlet in Willits, California. In keeping with the retailer's theme of the Great Outdoors, the wall treatments bring the California redwood forests and coastline to life inside the outlet.

MORE GAMMA IMAGING DIGITAL WALLPAPER PROJECTS

La Rabida Childrens Hospital wanted to decorate one of its main elevator lobbies with juvenile images. Because of the hospital's special sanitary needs, the wall graphics would have to stand up to regular cleanings. To meet this requirement, Gamma used color solvent based inks normally specified for outdoor usage, allowing the colorful wall graphics to be cleaned without risk of damage. Total coverage of the walls include two 9' x 14' sections, one 9' x 27' section and one 9' x 25' section.

At IPC International Corporation, an investigative and protection company headquartered in north suburban Chicago, Gamma digitally scanned photos at high resolutions sufficient for enlargement, output them as a digital wallscape, and installed the wallscape in a large circular rotunda. The results are crystal clear images that appear to jump off the wall. Total coverage: 4' x 67' (linear).

At Vienna Beef's corporate headquarters, Gamma Imaging covered industrial gray stairway walls leading to the executive offices with giant images of Vienna's Chicago Style Red Hots with all of the trimmings. Total coverage: 175 square feet.

Gamma has also produced custom wallpaper projects for banks, hospitals, museums and universities, including wall decals for the Washington Mutual Bank, wall murals for the Harris Bank, vinyl wallscapes for LaRabida Children's Hospital, wall treatments for the Jack Nicklaus Museum, custom wallpaper borders for United Way, and wallcoverings for Davis College in Toledo, Ohio.

Free Medical Conferences to Address Dramatic Increase in High Tech Imaging Tests

Free Medical Conferences to Address Dramatic Increase in High Tech Imaging Tests

Chicago, Ill. & Urbana, Ill. (PRWEB) May 11, 2011

Nationally, it is estimated that 20 to 30 percent of currently performed High Tech Diagnostic Imaging (HTDI) procedures such as CT, MRI, PET, and Nuclear Cardiology exams are medically unnecessary or inappropriate.

Unnecessary imaging tests needlessly expose patients to radiation and add $ 30 billion annually to the unsustainable growth in healthcare costs. Providers are relying more on HTDI. In the last 10 years, the number of CT and MRI scans per patient has doubled and tripled, respectively, according to a 2008 Health Affairs article.

Two free medical conferences will open discussion on the topic. They will examine how the availability of decision supports for physicians at the point of care, when ordering imaging tests, can lead to efficiencies for healthcare professionals, safer patient care and scientific guidance for decision-making.

Quality Quest for Health of Illinois is partnering with the Midwest Business Group on Health, Carle Foundation Hospital, and University of Illinois College of Medicine (Peoria campus) to bring “How Much Is Too Much? High Tech Imaging Use and Radiation Safety” to Chicago and Urbana in late May.
