Kozio Names SDC Systems Ltd. European Distributor; UK embedded systems tool & technology provide offers custom hardware validation & verification software and services

Indra Networks Announces StorCompress MX3 Hardware Compression Board for Virtual Tape Libraries

Indra Networks announced today the release of StorCompress MX3, a PCI-X compression board with a compression throughput of up to 450 MByte/s. MX3 implements compression algorithm entirely in hardware to enable Virtual Tape Library (VTL) and Disk-based backup systems to offer consistently high levels of throughput. MX3s compression is based on the lossless deflate algorithm, which delivers better compression ratio than older hardware compression technologies. In a VTL system, MX3 offers three explicit benefits: faster backups, increased disk capacity, and improved tape drive utilization.

StorCompress MX3 hardware architecture includes 64-bit, 133 MHz PCI-X bus interface and multiple compression engines working in tandem to deliver compression throughput of up to 450 MB/s and decompression throughput of up to 480 MB/s.

VTL customers are the focus behind the design and architecture of MX3. The disk-based VTL market is going through the roof right now and I expect 2006 to be a banner year for this technology. VTL systems need high performance data compression to cost effectively backup ever increasing corporate data. With compression throughput to match large-scale enterprise data loads and Indras industry-best hardware-based compression ratio, MX3 will enable our OEM customers to outperform their competitors. VTL users who are frustrated by the steep reduction in performance of their systems due to software compression will benefit most from MX3, said Anupama Anantharaman, V.P. of Business Development at Indra Networks.

StorCompress MX3 uses the deflate algorithm, which is compatible with the popular gzip and zlib open source software. This guarantees that the data compressed by StorCompress MX3 will be decompressible by gzip or zlib software running on the client computer or in the VTL system. Of course, this only becomes necessary if the StorCompress MX3 hardware is unavailable. In typical usage, MX3 compresses data on-the-fly as it is being written to disk by the backup software and decompresses it during data recovery. The hardware and software architectures are flexible enough to be quickly customized to an OEM customers unique needs. To integrate with MX3, a customer needs to make calls to the MX3 compression API from its VTL or backup software. Driver is available for Linux RedHat versions 7.2 and 9, and Fedora Core 1, 2, 3, and 4. Other notable features of MX3 include a kernel level API, CRC32 or Adler32 error checking for data protection, anti-expansion, parity error checking for both incoming and outgoing data, and built-in decompression engine to facilitate fast recovery of data. StorCompress MX3 hardware and software leverage Indra Networks five years of R&D in developing compression coprocessors to enable OEM customers to offer hardware compression with the shortest time to market.

Indras StorCompress products maximize network bandwidth, available storage capacity and system throughput through lossless data compression. Typical applications for StorCompress include Disk-To-Disk Backup, VTL, and data archival. Depending on the type and size of the data being compressed, StorCompress can reduce data size by 2x to 10x. By reducing the size of the data, on average, to about one-third of its original size with almost no CPU utilization, StorCompress products enable network servers and storage appliances to handle large amounts of data without affecting their throughput. When used in storage appliances, Indras products will allow OEMs to offer higher capacity products at a much lower cost.
