One of the notable sites leading Mac OS X adoption in the cluster and grid space is Virginia Tech. Its System X cluster landed at number three on the Top500 list in November of 2003 and was recently upgraded to an Xserve G5 based cluster.

The Moab suite provides Mac OS X sites with an easy cross-over into the supercomputing arena, as users can engage in high performance computing without wasting time learning to maneuver through a difficult interface.

“Advanced and highly configurable workload management capabilities are essential for our computational science and engineering HPC environment,” said Michael Campbell, HPC Software Administrator at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). “We have multiple clusters, several hundred users and many research groups that span various departments and universities. This diverse user base ranges from individuals doing thesis work, to class projects, to huge production simulations requiring thousands of processors. The Moab Cluster Suite can be used to enforce service level delivery to users, groups, projects or organizational units. Moab's service level enforcement can ensure the right resources are delivered and that response times are optimized. Reports can be generated to accurately monitor usage and can be used for cost sharing or bill-back purposes, using either virtual credits or actual financial charges.

As far as computing power goes, the AMT-6010 comes standard with an ultra low-voltage mobile Intel Pentium III 866MHz CPU, 128MB RAM (upgradeable to 640MB), and a 20GB hard drive (upgradeable to 120GB). There is 32MB of onboard video RAM. Standard communication devices on the AMT-6010 include 10/100BT LAN, wireless LAN and a 56K fax modem. There are options for wireless modem and Bluetooth support. Expansion capability includes a Type III PCMCIA card bus slot, a CompactFlash slot, and two USB 1.1 ports. There is an optional docking station that provides AC97 audio support, 4 USB 2.0 ports and 8 RS-232 serial ports.

Other options include a vehicle or wall mount, a USB hub, and a hard shell carrying case. The AMT-6010 can be powered by the built-in (but replaceable) 6-cell smart Lithium-ion battery or the 100-240VAC power adapter. The product will be launched at the Intel Learning Series Alliance Summit that is being held at The Palazzo in Las Vegas, NV from March 1-4 2011. The educational content will be provided by the Shodor Education Foundation who has great success at the elementary through college level for over fifteen years. Robert M. The Shodor Education Foundation’s collaboration with SCE is now making their materials available worldwide, whether a student has access to the internet or not. Dr, Panoff stated, “What Interactivate + will enable is a dynamic visual exploration (or re-visiting) of the whole concept of derivative, integral, limits, recursion, sequences, etc. to get some insight that may have been missing before.” He further stated, "What we have claimed and proven is that these materials in a blended instructional style can be used effectively to help remediate, with the right instructor and attitude on the part of the student.”

Interactivate + Intervention (I + I) is an innovative and intensive math intervention program that fills gaps in an individual’s math background and utilizes a blended approach that balances in-class instruction with the Web-based content of Shodor’s Interactivate.

I + I has the objective of converting students from “memorizers” to individuals who understand math concepts, returning them to their classroom with potential to succeed in the standard curriculum.
