Stevens Researchers Develop Cognitive Radio Based Dynamic Spectrum Access Wireless Communications

Dynamic Spectrum, LLC, a new start-up commercializing cognitive radio technology from Stevens Institute of Technology, has been awarded a $ 150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. The grant gives a boost to Stevens efforts to commercialize academic research and development.

Dynamic Spectrum is building on a comprehensive Stevens solution, funded by the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Justice, for cognition-enabled dynamic spectrum access (DSA) wireless communications which allows intelligent, efficient and secure access to underutilized parts of the radio spectrum or spectrum white spaces. It has the potential to transform the multi-billion dollar global telecommunications market, leading to more efficient cellular networks, interoperable wireless public safety communications, low cost rural broadband connectivity, and infrastructure for robust mobile video applications.

The Dynamic Spectrum team consists of the inventors R. Chandramouli and K.P. Subbalakshmi, Stevens professors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with Dr. Vijay P. Kumar as the CEO. Kumar led networking research at Bell Labs for more than 20 years and brought products such as the ATLANTA ATM chip set and PacketStar gigabit router from the research lab to the marketplace. They formed Dynamic Spectrum under the auspices of the Stevens Office of Academic Entrepreneurship (OAE), a pioneer in taking academic research to market.

These researchers have distinguished themselves as pioneers in the wireless radio communications arena, said Stevens Associate Provost Christos Christodoulatos. We are proud to support their efforts to make more efficient use of the radio spectrum.

"Our technology will enable smart, opportunistic access to spectrum from any mobile device," said Chandramouli.

"Security concerns will be addressed as an integral part of our design process," said Subbalakshmi.

The worldwide shortage in spectrum, the policies from regulatory bodies favoring shared spectrum access, and the development of relevant standards make the moment right to exploit DSA technology. We will bring a new generation of wireless communication products to commercial and military networks, said Kumar.

Chandramouli, Subbalaskshmi and Kumar are partnering with the Brookline Police Department in Massachusetts to pilot test their technology.

A new car advertising strategy is rapidly gaining advocates for its ability to interactively grab the public’s attention: the use of Dynamic Images for promotional poster, signage display, and POS sales support. These next generation graphics, produced by Dynamic Images (http://www.dynamicimages.com), a division of PP/G in Hawthorne, California, have received credit for their ability to portray product features and benefits with 3D graphic depth and animated graphics effects like zooms, flips, and dissolves -- hence the namesake, “dynamic image” lenticular graphics.

Audi recently installed Dynamic Images in 118 UK showrooms for the launch of its remodeled A6 as part of a point of purchase display using two versions of 1x1.5 meter magnetic-backed panels. In one design, the graphics depict the A6 zooming toward the viewer to come to rest in an extreme front-view close up.

“Dynamic imagery and lenticular are better known for outdoor campaigns,” said Alex Moss, marketing director of Hive Associates, the London-based ad agency that produced the campaign for BBH Audi Retail. “It works just as well in-store, especially when it adds a dynamic edge to what would otherwise be a static display.”

These high-end graphics use a patented photographic process purchased from Eastman Kodak that employs large-scale (up to 48”x 96”) photographic film instead of cardboard to provide up to three times the resolution and color intensity of traditional litho lenticulars and three times the animation time for a full range of motion to add impact to automotive outdoor advertising campaigns.

At the Paris Auto Show in Sept. 2004, Peugeot unveiled its new model 1007 car using Dynamic Image posters.

“Peugeot wanted to demonstrate the opening of its remote power sliding doors for auto dealers in poster form, and wasn’t satisfied with static photos which can’t show motion,” explains Jean Luc Thorel, Associate Director of Dynaxium, the Paris-based international marketing firm that developed the poster campaign for Peugeot. “They considered streaming video, but this wasn’t visible enough in bright lighting, and the cost was prohibitive.”

In the end, Peugeot decided on Dynamic Images. “These generated enormous interest, with their interactive ability to tailor 3D and illustrative motion to the viewer’s vantage point,” says Thorel. “Peugeot is surprisingly happy and plans to use the same visuals in a pan-Euro ad campaign.”

Recently, Toyota used Dynamic Images in its Sienta campaign, for which it won the Dentsu Award, Japan’s highest honor of advertising excellence, in the poster category.

“We needed to highlight the benefits of easy-folding seats with eye catching visuals,” says Keisuke Konishi, Senior Sales Manager for Meisho Printing, the Tokyo-based printing company that produced, with Dentsu and Toyota, the poster campaign for Toyota. “The Dynamic Image was a dramatic, interactive way to show how easily the second row of seats allow access to the seats in back. Toyota is very pleased with the Dynamic Image lenticular posters, and is planning a new project using them in early 2005.”

On display for a first-look in the company’s booth (#673) throughout PhotoPlus Expo 2010 (Jacob Javits Center, New York, NY, October 28-30, 2010), HDR Express will be available for purchase in December 2010.

To help demystify the HDR process, HDR Express automates many portions of the HDR production process, such as tone mapping and halo reduction, offering a streamlined and very easy-to-follow workflow. Upon importing the multiple exposures required for the HDR process, the simplified user interface presents an animated preview of their HDR image along with five tone mapping presets to choose from, each optimized for highlight, midtone or shadow rendering. For the quickest results, users can then choose from a series of color and style presets or create their own presets using the program’s adjustment sliders. Adjustment sliders are available for brightness, highlight and shadow recovery, black point, contrast, saturation and white balance. In addition to the streamlined workflow, the newly developed processing algorithms in HDR Express enables users to view edits in real-time.

With HDR Express we have dramatically reduced the complexity and learning curve for HDR photography software,” said Alfred Zee, CEO of Unified Color Technologies. “For the first time, novice photographers will be able to produce great results from their HDR images with the same type of intuitive tools they use for all their other images. Like all Unified Color products, HDR Express leverages the company’s Beyond RGB color model, resulting in the most true-to-life HDR possible. Beyond RGB separates brightness from color information thus eliminating the color shifts often associated with tone mapping, a process that often results in undesired artifacts that many associate with the “HDR look”. As a result, HDR Express produces a more accurate representation of the colors and tonal range that the photographer saw in the viewfinder.

Whether using HDR Express to apply HDR effects to a single image or merging unlimited exposures to maximize the dynamic range, the software accepts popular JPEG and TIFF files as well as many of the major manufacturers’ RAW formats. Once the work has been finalized, users can save the results as a JPEG, 8-bit or 16-bit TIFF, or preserve the full dynamic range of the HDR image by exporting in Unified Color’s native 32-bit BEF file.
