North Shore-LIJ Completes Last Phase of $50M Upgrade of its Diagnostic Imaging Systems, $12M for GE Low-Dose CT Scanners to Reduce Patients Radiation Exposure

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that it completed the last phase of a $ 50 million, three-year project to upgrade its diagnostic imaging systems. The final phase cost $ 12 million and included installing 15 computed tomography (CT) scanners at its healthcare facilities in the metropolitan area to reduce patients’ exposure to radiation and provide the highest quality imaging.

CT technology is a critical tool for diagnosis and early detection of cancers, cardiac disease, neurological problems, trauma, inflammation and other conditions.

Last June, North Shore-LIJ announced at a news conference its purchase of 15 GE low dose CT scanners for 10 of its facilities on Long Island and in New York City. This initiative was part of the first, $ 50 million step in an on-going effort by the health system to replace or update all of its conventional diagnostic imaging systems through quality initiatives designed to assure cutting edge technological capabilities while also assuring patient safety. In addition to the equipment, North Shore-LIJ also installed system-wide monitoring software, which tracks radiation exposure by CT, creating a database that monitors levels of emission and helps radiologists adjust their practices based on the latest clinical evidence.

“North Shore-LIJ is one of the first health systems in the country to replace or upgrade all of its diagnostic imaging equipment to reduce patients’ risks to radiation exposure,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “This initiative is a significant investment in our commitment to move beyond treating illness but also to protect public health.”

The Joint Commission, the nation’s top hospital and healthcare accrediting organization, issued a sentinel alert about the long-term radiation risks of diagnostic imaging in 2011. Jason Naidich, MD, chairman of radiology at North Shore-LIJ, said the health system was already planning its major project to upgrade its CTs and radiology equipment when the report made national news.

“North Shore-LIJ has a comprehensive radiology safety program across its hospitals and outpatient imaging facilities,” Dr. Naidich said. “Our radiology physicians, technologists, and physicists are specifically trained in radiation safety and are committed to limiting patients’ exposure to the lowest dose necessary to make the proper diagnosis.

“We offer low-dose CT imaging in every community the health system serves and all of our emergency departments are equipped with the most-up-to-date, low-dose CT scanners,” Dr. Naidich said. “This is important for everyone, but especially for children and young adults who may be more susceptible to harm from radiation exposure over time.”

Ventura Water Completes Initial Evaluation of New, Non-Toxic Wastewater Treatment Technology

Ventura Water, the City of Venturas Water Department, has completed an initial evaluation phase of a project to transition its wastewater treatment plant to a safe, non-toxic, sustainable technology to replace the current chlorine-based disinfection process in use at the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility. This innovative project is in partnership with Pasteurization Technology Group (PTG), which has pioneered the industrys only non-chemical wastewater disinfection process that also generates renewable energy. The goals of the project are to discontinue handling hazardous chemicals, reduce costs, and potentially support expansion of the water reuse program to help preserve the beautiful local estuary and coastline.

Ventura Water initiated the project to eliminate the current chlorine-based wastewater treatment process and attain greater efficiency and sustainability. Ventura Water managers and engineers, as part of their continuous efforts to lower costs and protect the environment, identified PTGs technology as a potential solution, and developed a set of criteria to evaluate new technology to replace the citys existing wastewater disinfection process.

PTGs technology was identified as the lowest-cost alternative in a study led by Carollo Engineers, who are experts in wastewater engineering. This study resulted in the decision to install a PTG evaluation unit, which is currently processing 500,000 gallons of wastewater per day, and offers the potential to scale up to 20 million gallons of wastewater per day. Since December 2011, the evaluation unit has been undergoing extensive tests to prove that it meets the Ventura Water Reclamation Facilitys stringent standards for water safety while offering the potential to reduce the facilitys operating costs.

Highlights of the initial evaluation phase:

The PTG system is successfully disinfecting Venturas wastewater, meeting Californias Title 22 standards for water disinfection, rendering it safe for non-potable re-use.

The PTG system can deliver significant cost savings for Ventura. Total electricity costs to power the facility are currently approximately $ 900,000 per year. Because the PTG system efficiently utilizes waste heat and reuses energy, early estimates show that the system may generate enough energy to power itself and the entire facility at about half of today's cost.

Eliminating chlorine from the disinfection process delivers additional cost savings. Disinfection chemicals currently cost Ventura approximately $ 250,000 per year, and there are also significant staff costs associated with chemical handling and emergency preparedness.

With this phase completed, Ventura Water will now begin additional testing and optimization to determine specific design options, possibly taking advantage of more biogas and/or expanding co-generation opportunities. Final design and construction would follow completion of this phase.

"Ventura Water is continually seeking improvement of our treatment and operational processes, said Ventura Water General Manager Shana Epstein. We are pleased to be partnering in this important project that is demonstrating effective disinfection without chemicals as well as a potential for significant operational savings, if fully implemented, down the road.

The innovative design and operational efficiency of this technology interested us immediately, said Ventura Water Wastewater Utility Manager Dan Pfeifer. Over the course of the next few months, we will be optimizing the system to maximize efficiency and minimize costs while planning the next steps.

The system has been processing more than 15 million gallons per month during this initial testing phase and has met or exceeded all the goals we set. We look forward to the next phase of the process, which will validate that PTGs technology can significantly reduce operating costs while transitioning Ventura Water to a chemical-free approach to wastewater disinfection.

Innovative wastewater treatment technology is toxin-free and generates clean energy

PTGs technology is the first and only to combine wastewater disinfection with renewable-energy generation. PTGs patented technology can use the digester gas (often referred to as biogas, a natural by-product of wastewater treatment) as fuel to drive a turbine that generates renewable electricity that can offset the electivity consumed by a typical wastewater treatment plant. The hot exhaust air from the turbine (energy that is typically wasted) is then passed through a series of heat exchangers that increase the temperature of the wastewater to a level that disinfects the wastewater stream. PTGs technology is significantly more cost-effective and more energy-efficient than other methods. And, unlike other wastewater disinfection approaches, PTGs systems do not require toxic chemicals such as chlorine, or costly electrical power and expensive UV lamps.

JaguarPC, a leading provider of end-to-end web hosting solutions, has completed the second phase to replace all its server hardware. The process which began last year replaced all servers that had single or dual processors with one core to the new AMD dual core CPU servers. In addition, the web host has completed testing and begun implementing a new enterprise backup management system that will increase backup speed and performance for its clients.

The new dual core servers also have significant upgrades to the amount of RAM as well as newer RAID disk arrays across all the systems which have greatly improved redundancy and access speeds. All accounts with JaguarPC will be on the same hardware platform, making plan upgrade migrations even easier. Initial results of the completed server upgrades show an improvement in services loading time on the network and near 100% uptime. Patch management is also easier, leading to quicker and more frequent updates.

JaguarPC is also adding a new enterprise backup management system after initial testing showed greatly improved reliability and performance. The backup system uses a new methodology that reduces the loads of the servers being backed up which removes the dreaded nightly slowdown of servers during the backup process, and also helps eliminate incomplete backups. Backups will also be faster, more accurate, less burdensome to the servers and more reliable. The third phase of the upgrade process of both hardware and backup systems will completed in the next 60 days.

"In a market where every provider is moving towards the cheapest alternatives possible, this is part of our plan to rather focus on delivering quality web services," says Greg Landis, chief executive officer of JaguarPC.
