New Avocent IPMI Appliance Extends Management and Control to IPMI Servers in Data Centers

HUNTSVILLE, AL (PRWEB) January 20, 2005

Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) today announced a new addition to the DS Series, the DSI5100 Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) proxy appliance that provides secure monitoring and management of IPMI-enabled servers. This cost-effective solution allows out-of-band access to embedded sensors on servers and target devices without the installation of new tools. IPMI data provides a means for IT administrators to remotely monitor and control system health, and control power without the need for external power supplies.

DSView® 3 software provides a user-friendly single interface for managing IPMI, KVM, serial and external managed power connections. The DSI5100 appliance integrates Avocent market-leading embedded IPMI products with its existing data center products to ensure administrators experience a high degree of quality and compatibility when managing today’s servers from vendors like Dell, IBM and HP.

“Avocent continues to find ways to help IT administrators protect their investment,” said Bill Neiland, vice president of product marketing. “Combining Avocent-enabled server and appliance products offers the best return on investment for managing the data center rack.”

“Avocent provides the leading server manufacturers with embedded management technologies such as IPMI, KVM and Virtual Media,” said Dave Perry, senior vice president, OEM division. “The combination of our software and this new appliance future-proofs a data center since administrators can easily add connectivity to IPMI-enabled servers as their infrastructure grows.”

More about IPMI

IPMI defines a common and secure interface to how vendors monitor their system hardware and sensors (temperature, voltage, fan, etc.), control system components (power supplies, blades, etc.), log important system events (chassis intrusion, system reset, etc.) and allow administrators to remotely manage and recover failed systems. It is typically implemented at the silicon level, on a baseboard management controller (BMC), or processor, and is independent of the CPU and OS.

More about DSView 3 software

The DSView 3 management software system is the IT industry’s first fully redundant, replicating solution for network administrators. With the DSView 3 software system, administrators can have secure browser-based control of servers, serial devices, DSUs and IPMI-enabled servers attached to any Avocent DS Series appliance.

Parker Waichman LLP Reports that Over 900 Patients Suffered Cardiac Arrest at Fresenius Dialysis Centers in 2010

(PRWEB) June 21, 2012

Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm dedicated to protecting victims from defective drugs and medical devices, is notifying the public about a recent discovery concerning Fresenius Medical Care and two dialysis products, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. According to the New York Times, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are associated with elevated bicarbonate levels, a problem that is linked to a six-fold increased risk for cardiopulmonary arrest.

According to an internal memo dated November 4th 2011, 941 hemodialysis patients experienced cardiac arrest from 667 Fresenius facilities in 2010. The company conducted an analysis of these patients, comparing them to over 80,000 other dialysis patients in the same center. Overall, the data indicated that excess bicarbonate, or alkalosis, significantly increased the risk of heart problems in hemodialysis patients.

GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are powder and liquid dialysis products, respectively. They both contain acetate, but GranuFlo contributes twice as much as NaturaLyte. The liver rapidly metabolizes acetate to the alkaline substance bicarbonate, which is used in dialysis to counteract the acidity that can build up in the blood. But according to the New York Times, these products contain more acetate than its competitors, and thus results in more bicarbonate in the body. These excess bicarbonate levels increase the risk for heart attack, according to the memo.

While Fresenius alerted its own physicians and medical directors about the issue, it did not notify the public or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the findings until the agency received an anonymous copy of the memo and inquired about it. When Dr. Franklin W. Maddux, chief medical officer of Fresenius North America, was questioned about the companys lack of action, he said that it was not in a condition for general consumption, according to the New York Times. When the company did inform its customers in late March, the issued letter did not mention the 941 patients who had suffered cardiac arrest, nor did it include other statistics highlighted in the memo.

Here we have a textbook example of a company trying to minimize the dissemination of information outside of its walls, says Matthew McCauley, attorney at Parker Waichman LLP. Fresenius clearly chose not to advise its outside customers about these documented cardiac risks and that is reprehensible conduct.

The issue has prompted an FDA probe to determine whether or not their failure to warn violated federal regulations. According to Law360, the investigation may even come to encompass the entire company. Last month, the FDA issued a Safety Communication warning about alkali dosing errors for products like GranuFlo and NaturaLyte in hemodialysis patients.;;

Virginia Tech Signs Agreement with Hilton Hotels Corporation to Manage Hotels and Conference Centers

Virginia Tech Signs Agreement with Hilton Hotels Corporation to Manage Hotels and Conference Centers

BLACKSBURG, VA (PRWEB) September 21, 2003

Virginia Tech has expanded its relationship with Hilton Hotels Corporation to manage the university’s new hotel, The Inn at Virginia Tech, and the Skelton Conference Center in preparation for their opening in May 2005. Vice Provost for Outreach and International Affairs John E. Dooley announced the new accord, which will complement the agreement under which Hilton has managed The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center for the Virginia Tech Foundation under the Doubletree brand. This agreement, which will go into effect on October 1, 2003, will also provide for Hilton’s management of the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center on the Virginia Tech campus.

“Virginia Tech is instituting this new working relationship with Hilton two years ahead of the new hotel and conference center’s grand opening to allow ample time to perfect coordinated operations with the Donaldson Brown staff, which will move to the new facility, and to plan administration of a second large operation with first-class facilities. We are looking for benefits to both operations, particularly in day-to-day operations and marketing, and to the university as a whole,” said Dooley. “We are confident that Gary Walton, who has demonstrated his mettle as general manager of The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center for Hilton, will also excel as the managing director for both facilities under the new umbrella arrangement.”

According to University Provost Mark McNamee, the university is “very happy to have this management team on board that will assist us in strengthening our historic work in outreach, continuing education, and other programs that are carried out through our hotels and conference centers. Our current Hilton relationship with the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center has been very successful in helping us to develop the outreach programs that take knowledge from the university off campus to the public.”

The Inn at Virginia Tech and the Skelton Conference Center will be part of the university’s new $ 46 million alumni and conference center on campus. The hotel will feature 147 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites. More than 20,000 square feet of technologically advanced meeting space at the conference center will include a ballroom with a seating capacity of 800, a dedicated auditorium, and 15 additional conference rooms. When complete, the mixed-use facility will be the largest hotel and conference center in Virginia west of Roanoke.

The university’s alumni association, an important partner in the agreement, supports the new umbrella management arrangement. According to Thomas C. Tillar, Tech’s vice president for alumni relations, “All of us in the Virginia Tech Alumni Association are very pleased that the management organization for The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center will also be responsible for managing the new hotel and conference center on campus. Many alumni have been complimentary of the Roanoke property and will be delighted to have the same quality of service and comfort at the new hotel.”

“Hilton is delighted to have the opportunity to expand its current relationship with Virginia Tech and apply that experience towards ensuring a successful conversion to the University’s outstanding new hotel and conference center,” said Gary Walton of Hilton Hotels Corporation. “Bringing the university’s hotel operations together under a single Hilton management team will certainly create great synergies, efficiencies, and improved performance for both properties.”

Walton has been area vice president and general manager of The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center–A Doubletree Hotel for nearly ten years. A 26-year veteran of the hospitality industry, he has managed the day-to-day operations of numerous hotels throughout the country. Walton is a member of the Virginia Tech Hospitality and Tourism Management program advisory board and a board member of both the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association and the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Walton will spend part of each week at Virginia Tech. A management committee representing both Virginia Tech-related properties will coordinate the marketing and operations for the two hotels and conference centers.

The Norfolk Southern Corporation donated The Hotel Roanoke to the Virginia Tech Real Estate Foundation after it closed the landmark property in 1989, bringing to an end 107 years of railroad management of the facility, known as the “Grand Old Lady.” Under the leadership of Raymond Smoot, executive vice president of the Virginia Tech Foundation, the foundation restored and modernized the hotel with donations and loans, many from local individuals and companies, and expanded the conference facilities with the City of Roanoke’s participation.

Today, The Hotel Roanoke, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, has 332 rooms, including 19 suites, and 63,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, accommodating groups from 10 to 1,400 for events and conferences.

About The Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center:

The Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg has 128 guest rooms and 10,000 square feet of meeting space in the conference and dining facilities that can accommodate up to 400 people. Outreach Program Development, part of Outreach and International Affairs, currently manages Donaldson Brown, which is adjacent to Alumni Hall. The hotel and the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Virginia Tech have a mutually beneficial arrangement of shared resources under which students have the opportunity to gain experience by working in a full-service hotel. Faculty and hotel staff provides innovative approaches to learning, while the collaboration visibly demonstrates the cooperation between academic and auxiliary components of Virginia Tech.

About the Virginia Tech Alumni and Conference Center:

Virginia Tech is now constructing a complex of three new facilities: a hotel, a conference center, and an alumni center. Plans for the 191,360-gross-square-foot complex were first made public in October 2000 and groundbreaking occurred in April 2003.

The Inn at Virginia Tech will feature three executive suites, three parlor suites, and 141 comfortably appointed guestrooms. The hotel also will provide space for Virginia Tech's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management program. In addition to the day-to-day experience provided by this facility, students will also benefit from the on-site hotel/restaurant management lab space, a demonstration kitchen, and a classroom.

The Skelton Conference Center, named for Bill and Peggy Skelton, is directly connected to the alumni center’s second level and to the Inn at Virginia Tech. It will give the university community the capacity to host major events, from reunions and social gatherings to international meetings and teleconferences. The Skelton Conference Center will include a 9,200-square-foot ballroom capable of seating up to 750 people, 13 meeting and conference rooms of various sizes and a spacious pre-function hall with a view of the Alumni Lawn. The inside function and outside terrace spaces, when used together, will be able to accommodate more than 5,000 people.

The Holtzman Alumni Center, named for William Holtzman of Edinburg, Va., will be the home of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and offices for associated university personnel. In addition to the Grand Hall, the Holtzman Center will include a museum, special collections library, an auditorium, meeting rooms, and offices.

Online Tech First Again for SAS70 at All Three Michigan Data Centers

Online Tech First Again for SAS70 at All Three Michigan Data Centers

SAS 70 Audited

Ann Arbor, MI (PRWEB) October 20, 2009

Online Tech, Michigan's Leading Data Center Operator, announced today that it has successfully completed its SAS 70 (Statement on Auditing Standards number 70) Type II audit for all three of its Michigan Data Centers. Six months after successfully completing the SAS 70 Type I audit on all of its data centers, Online Tech raised the bar again by completing the Type II audit through UHY, LLP. Online Tech is unique in Michigan in that all three of its data centers have successfully completed a SAS 70 Type II audit.

SAS 70 for data centers is similar to ISO 9000 standards for manufacturing enterprises. SAS 70 is a nationally recognized audit standard for evaluating the process and security control procedures across the data center. A Type I audit demonstrates that the data center operator has the proper controls and procedures around physical and network security, environmental controls, system availability and performance. The Type II audit demonstrates that not only are the controls and procedures are in place, but that those controls have been followed consistently over time.

Online Tech invested nearly $ 250,000 into the SAS 70 audit process to ensure the security, controls, and processes in each of its data centers are closely followed and monitored. "We won a significant business based on the success of a SAS 70 Type I audit earlier this year," said Mike Klein, President of Online Tech. "The Type II audit demonstrates our commitment to delivering on our security and quality promises and proves our ability to support companies facing Sarbanes Oxley requirements when they outsource their data centers through colocation or dedicated server hosting."

By completing the SAS 70 audit process, Online Tech's clients have assurance that each of its data centers consistently demonstrates the same high standard of security and control. Online Tech posted its experience about Surviving a SAS 70 Audit on its web site and authored several articles on its blog including What to Look for From a SAS-70 Hosting Provider and What is a SAS-70 Audit?.

The independent auditing firm UHY, LLP examined each of the data centers closely, specifically examining compliance with the control objectives in the areas of organizational structure, governance and administration, physical and environmental controls, physical and network security, and system availability and performance.

The SAS 70 audit, or Statement on Auditing Standards ("SAS") No. 70, was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) as a means of auditing and reporting the effectiveness of operations and controls of a service provider. The resulting SAS 70 audit report enables Online Tech to communicate details on internal operations and security controls to our clients in an industry accepted format. Independent auditors perform thorough testing and assessment of each of our controls.

About Online Tech

Online Tech, Inc. is one of the Midwest's Premier Managed Data Center Operators. Online Tech helps companies manage their growing demand for data and computing capacity through its SAS 70 secure and reliable multi-tenant data centers. With a full range of managed colocation and managed dedicated server offerings, industry leaders trust Online Tech to insure their servers are always on, always online, and always safe.
