CompAmerica, the GiantKillers™, Announces the “Wonder PC” Program

(PRWEB) October 22, 2004

CompAmerica announces that its 'warmer, friendlier, more proactive service department' and “better products, service and breadth of choices” make up its “GiantKiller” offerings: "The Wonder PC's." They can be found by punching the “PCs >” button on its home page at http://compamerica.com.

New LGA-775 PC's and CompAmerica’s own “VFTA” technology – which saves personal computers from primary hard drive failure by providing an automatic mirror image of the C: drive in real time – are featured in this section of its website.

“We can provide you anything from slim, widescreen 5 pound Centrino Laptops of our own to Cisco’s extraordinary Enterprise Routers, at a lower price. We have the technology people ready to program and install them for you! We simply eat their lunch!” stated CompAmerica’s Chairman Jack Shulman, discussing how it is that his company has a nearly zero failure rate, and isn’t overwhelmed with service requests on it’s 24x7 tech support lines. Shulman innovated the first desktop windowed personal computers in 1974 at a time when desktop computers “cost between $ 10 and $ 20,000, so consumers had no idea there were such things 20 years before Microsoft first released Windows 95.”

Shulman was also involved in the development of what became the PC architecture and other desktops in the 70’s, as well as heading up outside design and programming support for an IBM project called “Office of the Future” that led up to the PC, MAC, Windows and Mac/Os.

“It’s interesting how it is that marketing companies make it all look like one day someone stepped off the bus with a board and some floppies, and the next day there was PC Dos, then MAC/OS and Windows, and now the so-called ‘arrival’ of Linux. Linux, for example, arrived in 1965 not 2005. Those of us who innovate such inventions and discoveries are often completely or even deliberately forgotten in the perennial recycling of ideas that goes on in this industry. It is perverse to mis-attribute the origination of concept to Bill Gates or Paul Allan or Steve Jobs or Linus Torvald. While these marketing wizards do get incessantly wealthy as ball carriers in the current Generations of recycling/reintegrating our ideas, they did not originate any of those ideas. Those of us who invent the stuff are usually completely or even deliberately forgotten. We are left behind to get recycled by IBM and others as well, forced to come up with newer ideas while they hoard the vast quantities of revenue in outside businesses which leverage our past work. Such is what we believe about Dell, we believe them to be IBM PC Company with a modernized business model but MORE OF THE SAME products recycled into a 2nd and 3rd Generation marketing program. The recognizable traits of IBM recycling our handiwork is usually only recognizable to us, the originators. The consumers are usually well fooled.”

CompAmerica maintains a website at http://www.compamerica.com which has been deemed “highly innovative” by some. The website incorporates a “minimum number of clicks” (MNOC) architecture, a “streamlined shopping carts” approach, and an "Open Warehousing" design.

Payment is accepted electronically through secure payment or by phone or in person: checks, standard credit cards by phone, email or web, as well as PayPal by web, and Western Union.

The CompAmerica website is subdivided into several categories: PCs, Laptops, Servers, Industrial Computers and Technical Support. It claims to maintain the largest driver library of any computer manufacturer on the Internet. It also includes popular “Live Chat” and “Group Services”, along with a private intranet for IT and B2B buyers called the “B2B eStore”, which in partnership with Cnet.com, provides what may be the most concise, informative comparative shopping tool and intranet shopping cart system ever devised.

Visuals are simple; some products include a “select a picture” approach to providing full 3D views. A powerful Memory Configurator allows anyone to match memory to the product they are seeking to upgrade, and will also provide all the parameters they wanted to know about their own system, such as: fastest CPU, maximum Memory, type and style, bus speed and so forth. The Search engine is extremely fast at searching through nearly 8 million pages of information, and can find nearly any product in the industry or it’s equivalent.

CompAmerica has stated publicly that it believes companies on the web are “cleverly manipulating their shopping cart so as to lock you into purchasing a product, whether you want that one or not, they could be accused of bait and switch or worse, crate and switch.” Crate and Switch is the practice of subtly mis-stating the features of a product so it is not fully understood by the purchaser until they "uncrate it" after getting it to their home or office.

CompAmerica says that it's “Open Warehouse Web Architecture”, which also provides ADA Section 508 conforming products and services, is “next generation”, a site which uses the best practices to insure that consumers and IT and Business and Government are not patronized by the “Self Aggrandizement of No thought, Limited Choice, Cut Corners products” offered “in Dell Hell”.

"Ultimately, it's the Human Factor that makes the difference. A compassionate, interested vendor who understands technology is far easier to work with and far more accurate at fullfilling your precise needs, than a pushy, aggressive salesman who has scripts on how to mislead you into buying more than you need, while getting less than you thought. Our sales staff are all cross trained system engineers, and that means you get the right products at the right time with the right features, backed by common sense!" added Shulman.

“http://www.compamericadirect.com” and “http://www.CompAmerica.com” were developed by a team of experienced web developers who elected to go with a “slightly lower tech, higher degree of customer choice” environment that “didn’t automate everything, with natural jumping off points for the public that would allow them to elect to make a phone call to a Human Being at CompAmerica, who could advise them more cogently, without the kind of ‘sell them a PC at any cost, without any real choice’ processes” that others allegedly provide.

CompAmerica is a leader in industry innovations who can be reached by phone at 888-ASK-CSS-1, and by email at e-mail protected from spam bots.

Cluster Resources, Inc. Brings Leading Cluster Workload Management Software to Mac OX C High Performance Computing Environments

Spanish Fork, UT (PRWEB) November 8, 2004 -

— Cluster Resources, Inc. today announced the release of Moab Cluster Suite 4.2 for Mac OS X. It is the first release of Cluster Resources' cluster management suite to support the Mac OS X platform and includes: Moab Workload Manager™, a policy-based workload management and scheduling engine; Moab Cluster Manager™, a graphical cluster administration interface, monitor, and reporting tool; and Moab Access Portal™, an end-user job submission and management portal. Moab Cluster Suite 4.2 also supports Linux and Unix-based server platforms and Mac OS X, Linux, Unix and Windows clients.

Mac OS X and Apple Computer's Xserve hardware continue to see growing success in the High performance computing market with the much publicized success of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's (Virginia Tech) supercomputer and other leading deployments. High Performance Computing sites are now able to leverage Apple Computer's renowned ease of use and superior price performance with Cluster Resources' cluster management solutions to

achieve new levels of control and efficiency.

“Moab Workload Manager on Mac OS X allows for the management of traditional compute resources, as well as storage, network and licenses. This provides organizations with unparalleled control over how, when and by whom the resources of a cluster are accessed delivering up to 90 to 99 percent utilization.” said David Jackson, Chief Technology Officer of Cluster Resources, Inc. “The Web and desktop GUI interfaces empower administrators with significant management capabilities and enable end-users to submit their own jobs and self-manage their use of the system.”

"With dual G5 processing power and up to 8GB of ECC memory, Xserve G5 is affordable, easy to manage and easy to cluster making it the perfect platform for high performance computing,” said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “Moab Cluster Suite 4.2 delivers a powerful management suite for complex computational clustering to our customers who benefit from the strong performance of Mac OS X and Xserve G5 servers."

One of the notable sites leading Mac OS X adoption in the cluster and grid space is Virginia Tech. Its System X cluster landed at number three on the Top500 list in November of 2003 and was recently upgraded to an Xserve G5 based cluster.

“We achieved the underlying power required to be near the head of the Top500, and now with the Moab Cluster Suite we have the management and reporting we need to truly harness and control our powerful system,” said Kevin Shinpaugh, Director of Research and Cluster Computing of Virginia Tech. “Accounting for and allocating the millions of CPU hours available per year on System X is much easier now that we have Moab Cluster Suite. The reporting tools of Moab Cluster Manager clearly show us what has been done and Moab Workload Manager lets us express and enforce our rules.”

The Moab suite provides Mac OS X sites with an easy cross-over into the supercomputing arena, as users can engage in high performance computing without wasting time learning to maneuver through a difficult interface.

“Advanced and highly configurable workload management capabilities are essential for our computational science and engineering HPC environment,” said Michael Campbell, HPC Software Administrator at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). “We have multiple clusters, several hundred users and many research groups that span various departments and universities. This diverse user base ranges from individuals doing thesis work, to class projects, to huge production simulations requiring thousands of processors. The Moab suite provides a means by which these complex needs and changing priorities can be managed relatively easily from a single point of control.”

The Moab Cluster Suite can be used to enforce service level delivery to users, groups, projects or organizational units. Moab's service level enforcement can ensure the right resources are delivered and that response times are optimized. Reports can be generated to accurately monitor usage and can be used for cost sharing or bill-back purposes, using either virtual credits or actual financial charges.

“We wanted to enhance our cluster management as it was quite challenging to coordinate all the different applications, research groups and desired policy settings,” said David Osguthorpe, Director of Computational Biology of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

“Moab Workload Manager lets us set up global, cluster and user based rules and policies and automate them across the entire cluster. Our system is certainly more efficient now and we can give our users a better experience. That means more research gets done, our grant providers will be more pleased and we are better prepared to grow our system and the work that can be accomplished.”

The Moab Cluster Suite 4.2 is available for immediate release. Organizations interested in a free evaluation copy of Moab Cluster Suite or access to Cluster Resources' On-line Demonstration Cluster can visit http://www.clusterresources.com/products/eval.

Fighting Spam – Are You Doing it the Right Way?

(PRWEB) November 11, 2004

The inherent flaw of many spam filters is that they do too little, too late. This category includes the desktop filters and many server based spam routing filters. They do not solve the problem of spam handling. The mail administrators see a huge mass of spam going through their mail server system every day. Just a few years ago an Exchange server on a Pentium III had no problem serving a few thousand users. Now companies with a few hundred users have dual CPU Xenon running exchange 2003 in their budget or already in place. What happened? Did the emails get larger or the number of them greater? No, it is the spam these servers carry in their mail storage. That 2003 server may flex more muscles but it does not offer a solution to the basic problem. The spam still enters the exchange mail storage and may linger there for a long time.

The solution is simple. Don’t let the spam get near your exchange server. Think about it. Your old Exchange 5.5 Box with 80% less mail. It would perform well just like in the old days. To get 60%-90% spam is common among U.S. organizations. Storing it in the Exchange mail store or the individual workstation just does not make sense. Not convinced? Did you ever consider how many feet of tape of your backup contain just spam? Just think about the hours you backup spam every day and how much a bigger tape drive is going to cost.

There are filters that stop spam before it gets to the Exchange or SMTP server. These filters, in general, use the XWall principal by sitting in front of your mail server and stopping the spam before it gets to your server. That makes a huge difference. A company with 100 employees can expect to process and store 100,000 emails a week. Blocking spam ahead of their Exchange is likely to reduce the number of messages to a mere 20,000 per week. Xwall is one of the most sophisticated filters in the industry for stopping spam ahead of your server. XWall operates independently of Exchange. No plug-ins, no modifications to your Exchange server. That makes it compatible with all versions of MS-Exchange and many other mail servers. Its many filters are highly effective and configurable to accommodate companies, schools and institutions with anywhere from 20 to 10,000 users.

Most people agree that stopping spam before it gets to the Exchange server is the way to do it. Some, however, worry about losing that one important email. Processing all the spam through exchange into the user's junk mail folder sounds like a solution, but it’s more likely that important email will be overlooked in the sea of spam. ESATInformer offers a solution . You can stop the spam ahead of your server and still let your users have access to messages labeled as spam. With XWall and ESATInformer, Exchange is not burdened with carrying the spam. Instead, Esatinformer can retrieve these messages by user request from the XWall archive. The archive keeps messages for a specified number of days, set entirely by you. The user gets a spam report, typically daily. The report lists the spam subject and from address by the level of spam content. The borderline spam is listed on top of the report. The heavy spam is on the bottom. Instead of having to look through 200 spam messages the typical power users may look at the first 10 to 15 subjects and flies over the rest saving valuable time while reducing errors to a minimum. If he sees something he likes to have a closer look at, one click sends a retrieve request which is automatically processed.

XWall and ESATInformer are effective tools in the fight against spam. Consultants and installers know the value of the server based approach, the low cost and unlimited user count these tools offer. The XWall/ESATInformer combo presents a complete spam solution to customers at an affordable price. Xwall and ESAT are widely used in large corporations, schools and universities. The spam control system can be directly purchased from Ceratec as software or as a preinstalled hardware solution in form of the XWallBox spam appliance. Ceratec also provides technical support by phone, email and forum. For more information, call us at (512) 285-2620 or visit the Ceratec websites at http://www.xwall.us or http://www.esatinformer.com.

Conceptomatics Announces the ConceptServer 1.00

(PRWEB) November 12, 2004

The ConceptServer is used as a fast text-processing back end for text mining, automatic categorization, text summarization, spidering, indexing, and agent-based applications.

"The ConceptServer lets organizations efficiently mine large volumes of textual data that previously may have been too costly to analyze in a timely manner," said Douglas Snead, Technical Vice President of Conceptomatics.

The ConceptServer rapidly processes asynchronous client requests to automatically classify and categorize textual data. The server replies are standard XML envelopes which detail categories assigned to the text. The categories may then be used as "tags" to augment full text indexing and other Information Retrieval (IR) tasks.

To classify text, the ConceptServer uses a thesaurus-like vocabulary known as a "Concept Dictionary." A "Concept Dictionary" is an XML document that details topic categories, key words and phrases associated with categories, as well as relationships between categories. For example, the key words "cannabis" and "THC" might index to the same concept.

The Conceptomatics ConceptServer typically processes anywhere from about 8 up to more than 40 news articles a second, depending on the size of the document to be examined, size of the Concept Dictionary used, CPU speed, and system load.

Several ConceptServer back end processors are currently running on pilot web sites, where they continuously processes textual data. Each ConceptServer uses a dictionary specialized for the client and for the topics desired.

Southern California MacFair 2004 Attendees Help Clean Up the Environment By Properly Disposing of Over Five Tons of Their Obsolete Electronic Equipment

Norwalk, CA (PRWEB) November 19, 2004

Over 800 Macintosh enthusiasts descended on Cerritos College over three days this past weekend, November 12-14th for the Southern California MacFair 2004. It brought together 40 Mac related companies, 43 Mac seminars and 25 intensive Mac workshops. For the third year in a row, it was the largest Mac community get together in the southwest US.

In addition, this year the Southern California MacFair 2004 made arrangements to provide attendees free disposal of their old computer equipment including monitors, CPU, fax machines, printers, servers, phone systems and virtually any office electronics product. In two days, attendees disposed of over 11,280 pounds of electronic waste.

"We are thrilled that SoCal MacFair attendees properly disposed of over 5.5 tons of their obsolete electronics and that their old Macs didn't end up in landfills," said Keith Mueller, the show's organizer.

"I cleaned out my garage and disposed of 5 monitors, 6 computers, 6 printers, 2 faxes and a copier. I saved $ 150 in disposal costs at the SoCal MacFair," stated Lance Handy, an attendee at the event.

The hands on workshops were extremely popular and were taught by some of the world’s most respected instructors. "Beverly Houwing's Adobe Illustrator class was overwhelming. So much to digest and remember." stated Mark Bausman of Font & Center Graphic Design "This has to be one of the best hands on courses I have been to and that includes the ones I have attended at Macworld!"

The seminars at the SoCal MacFair were enthusiastically well-received "Our third year at the SoCal MacFair and its still the best Mac event in Southern California. Specifically enjoyed Gordon Bell and his Prosoft products which are life savers for Mac people" stated Charles Clark of Laguna Woods. Dr. Murray Massin also of Laguna Woods commented on the Marilyn Miller and the Mac Show "Don't miss it! You will enjoy an hour of fantastic clever entertainment using David Pogue lyrics."

Exhibitors and Seminar presenters were equally thrilled at the huge outpouring from the Mac Community.

"The SoCal MacFair 2004 was a success for Fastmac on all levels! Not only did we double our show sales expectations; we made contacts that will be repeat customers. The attendees were all very passionate about their Macs and were a pleasure to meet. Put us on next year's vendor list!" stated Michael Lowdermilk of Fastmac.

"Even though our software tool is geared more for a corporation or a software company the Southern California MacFair 2004 resulted in a number of good leads. We spoke to a lot of great people and felt it was time well spent for our company," said Redstone software VP of Sales, John Brennan.

"SoCal MacFair is a class act! The fair was professional and very well attended; an added plus was the quality of the facilities, staff, and attendees in my workshops. Truly an excellent event! I would definitely participate again!" commented Mike Descher, Apple consultant and workshop trainer.

Crossware Releases Flash Programming Software for Freescale ColdFire Boards

Cambridge, UK (PRWEB) November 24, 2004

Crossware (http://www.crossware.com), a leading embedded tools developer, has released flash programming software that can be used to program Freescale ColdFire® boards using its FireFly USB BDM (background debug mode) interface. This can save developers considerable amounts of time as FireFly can program flash more than 8 times faster than via a parallel port interface.

The flash software – available free of charge to users of Crossware’s FireFly interface - will simultaneously control up to 127 USB ports each connected to a separate ColdFire board. A single click of the mouse will program the selected software file into any or all of the connected boards.

The Crossware software can automatically generate a configuration script - required so that the target board can be correctly set up for flash programming - by examining the program that is to be downloaded. This feature eliminates the need for the script to be created manually.

Multiple program formats are supported including Motorola 'S' records, IEEE 695 and ELF. The software can be used with programs generated by any ColdFire tool chain as well as those generated with the Crossware ColdFire Development Suite.

Crossware developed its small yet powerful and fast FireFly BDM interface for Motorola’s ColdFire® family of chips. FireFly features a USB controller and requires no external crystal. The miniature debugger plugs directly into the target board minimizing signal delays and ensuring compatibility with the new generation of ColdFire chips running at up to 200 MHz.

The FireFly USB BDM interface is also driven by a new version of Crossware’s source level debugging software, which integrates seamlessly with the rest of its ColdFire Development Suite. The user interface is unchanged and so developers can simply replace their existing parallel port interface with the new USB debugger and immediately benefit from the improved performance. In addition, developers can also move to platforms such as the newer generation of notebook PCs, which do not have a parallel port.
