The Machine is Us/ing Us (Final Version)
"Web 2.0" in just under 5 minutes. mediatedcultures.net This is a slightly revised and cleaned up version of the video that was featured on YouTube in February 2007. I considered releasing it as an "eternal beta" in true Web 2.0 style, but decided to let it stand as is and start working on future projects. Many of my future videos will address the last 30 seconds of this video (the "rethink ..." part). Thank you all for the helpful comments on the earlier draft. It has been a great ...

This was probably, the most prescient, relevant, logical, and emotionally well put together anthropological piece I have seen so far. Amazing, understandable, and without fallacies. I approve. 5 stars!

Damn, watching this makes me want to get back into HTML. I haven’t studied it since high school and I have forgotten virtually everything. I should probably check out this XML while I’m at it; this video makes it sound like it’s the wave of the future.
But then again, the net has evolved quite a bit without me so I can honestly say that I have no idea what’s going to happen in the future. Maybe XML will fade out; I don’t see HTML going away anytime soon. It’s the mother-tongue of the Internet.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty! Do NOT associate with those given to CHANGE! Do NOT be afraid of sudden terror, Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes, For the Lord will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being caught. The wicked flee when noone pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion. The fear of the Lord is the begining of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction – Proverbs
FEAR NOT, PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMY – Jesus

I was glued to the screen as I watched this clip. We always are connected to the web but rarely think about it using us. I use it for practical everything in my life from research to keeping relationships strong. In the beginning, the clip shows various ways we use the web but then twist the message at the end by talking about a “machine” that uses us. I can see this point by how the “machine” can keep tabs on my likes, and find a pattern in my life by my frequent visits to certain information.

I felt this was kind of oversimplifying the technical stuff a little, especially the part about XML, XML tags can be virtually anything, so the whole title/description bit is specific to RSS. HTML isn’t really going away, it’s evolving and incorporated into how pages are being built, XHTML is pretty common place, styled by CSS, behavior added by javascript etc., compiled from an XML-based database by server-side languages like PHP or Ruby or C#, etc…
or have i been wrong this whole time?

Accuse me of being a pedant who is missing the point entirely, but between 0:47 and 0:53 in the video, the code typed does not appear to be valid HTML!
Seriously though, in the final part of the video he seems to be asking the right questions, but is not giving many answers.

i am really excited about the ideas that are in people’s heads nowadays…
the first time i’ve seen this video was this summer in an international training course in Estonia (one of the Baltic states near Russia). there were something around 30 people all over Euromediterranean region – Israel, Spain, Italy, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and the Baltic States.
this video was showed as an example of people’s collaboration. it is amazing. i believe that the author is a genius.
