Mural Dedicated to Americas Cup Sailor Andrew Bart Simpson Unveiled in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 04, 2013

Fine Art students from the Academy of Art University recently completed a mural dedicated to Andrew “Bart” Simpson, the sailor who was tragically killed on May 9, 2013, in the San Francisco Bay while training for the America’s Cup. An official dedication ceremony today included Artemis Racing team members, Dr. Elisa Stephens and Fine Art students. Academy of Art University students worked diligently to complete the mural in time for the beginning of the America’s Cup, in which Simpson’s Artemis Racing team competed.

“Bart loved to sail, and he particularly enjoyed his experiences in San Francisco,” said Iain Percy, Skipper and Tactician of Artemis Racing, and a great friend of Mr. Simpson. “His family appreciates this beautiful tribute to his life and all that the city has done to honor his life.”

Today’s ceremony included remarks by Iain Percy, and Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of the Academy of Art University.

“San Francisco will never forget the tragic loss of Mr. Simpson,” said Mayor Ed Lee. “We are all saddened by his passing, and hope that this mural dedicated in his honor will provide visitors and residents with a place they can come to celebrate his life.”

The mural, which is located at 150 Hayes St. in San Francisco, measures 116 feet wide and 50 feet high. The mural reads, “In Memory of America's Cup Sailor, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, Double Olympic Medalist, Artemis Racing.”

Eighteen Academy of Art University students collaborated on the project, including BFA student Kristoffer Tamondong Liwanag, who stated, “May 9 is a day I will never forget, being a student here in San Francisco when Mr. Simpson lost his life. I am grateful I had the opportunity to participate in creating this mural in his honor. It is something my classmates and I will remember for the rest of our lives.”

About the Academy of Art University

Academy of Art University, the largest private university of art and design in the United States, is educating students for the art and design jobs of the 21st Century. Established in 1929, the Academy is an output-based higher education model that provides open admissions to all students, but imposes a rigorous curriculum that requires the students to produce a portfolio of work that demonstrates a mastery of their field in order to graduate. Students are taught by a faculty of professionals from the existing marketplace, both online and on campus in San Francisco, who provide them with an understanding of what it takes to succeed in today’s business environment. The Academy’s hands-on curriculum produces graduates that possess great artistic and design skills -- and equally as important, the ability to put those talents to work immediately after graduation. As a result, Academy graduates are ready to compete for and win the jobs of the 21st Century in the fields of Acting, Advertising, Animation & Visual Effects, Architecture, Art Education, Art History, Fashion, Fashion Journalism, Fashion Styling, Fine Art, Game Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture & Design, Jewelry & Metal Arts, Landscape Architecture, Motion Pictures & Television, Multimedia Communications, Music Production & Sound Design for Visual Media, Photography, Visual Development, Web Design & New Media and Art Teaching Credential.
