SC Whitmore Virtual Charter School Embarks on Another School Year with CompuHigh Curriculum

South Carolina (PRWEB) August 21, 2013

Kids across the nation are sharpening up their new pencils and lacing up their new shoes to dash for the bus on the first day of school. Meanwhile, SC Whitmore students first day of school might look a good bit more low key to an outside observer. At SC Whitmore School, students simply log on to their classes from any computer, whether theyve put on their new school clothes and headed to the library or are still in their pajamas working at their kitchen table.

Enrollment at SC Whitmore virtual charter high school in South Carolina is up 70% as it begins its third year of classes this week. SC Whitmore curriculum will be provided again this year by CompuHigh. CompuHigh has been providing online high school curriculum since 1994 and specializes in courses designed especially for mastery learning. Mastery learning allows students to continue to work on a concept until they get it before moving on to the next lesson. Course assignments focus on skills acquisition and critical thinking with minimal rote tasks or multiple choice assignments. Lessons are designed for student to work individually with a teacher through multiple revisions of the assignments.

According to SC Whitmore School Principal, Ellen Ray, Students and parents have discovered that mastery-learning and a self-paced curriculum mean more flexibility and academic success. Students are not held back, or pushed ahead while working at the pace of a course in a traditional semester-based school calendar. Accelerated students move ahead and may graduate early, and even earn college credit while in high school. Students needing more time to complete a course are allowed to take the time they need, and are given the opportunity to complete courses in the summer. We call it 'School Your Way!

CompuHighs curriculum is accredited by AdvancED and approved by the state of South Carolina. Courses are taught by SC Whitmores licensed teachers specially trained in Mastery Online Education. The curriculum and teacher interaction pair up to create intensive, individualized learning experiences for high school students, according to CompuHigh Educational Director, Jeannette Geib. So, while the first day of school may look low key for SC Whitmore students, what is actually happening is anything but! Students are actively reading, listening, researching, thinking, writing, and asking their teachers questions. Students are working hard, says Geib, and above all, theyre really learning.

SC Whitmore School is still accepting new students for the 2013-2014 school year. Interested families can go to http://www.sc.whitmoreschool.com or call 1-866-476-6416 for more details and to apply.
