Staff Development for Educators Presents Dr. Yeap Ban Har, World-Renowned Expert at Advanced Training Institutes on Singapore Math

Petersborough, N.H. (PRWEB) April 24, 2012

Staff Development for Educators (SDE) is partnering with Dr. Yeap Ban Har, one of the worlds foremost experts in Singapore Math, to conduct advanced two-day institutes on August 23 in Houston, Texas and August 6-7 in Oak Lawn, Illinois. The Singapore Math: Beyond the Basics institutes will be ideal professional development for educators serving grades one through six and is part of SDEs effort to bring the hands-on, visual approach of Singapore Math to American classrooms. Since 1995, the international Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) has ranked Singapore as the worlds top performer in math education.

Institute attendees will see Singapore Math lessons in action, explore how students learn math, discover strategies to make fractions and other difficult concepts accessible to all students and connect abstract math concepts to their content. Ban Har will also describe how teachers can prepare students for success with the Common Core State Standards and instill students with real-world problem-solving skills. Registration information can be obtained at

Im pleased to forge this partnership with SDE and work on bringing these conferences and a new book to American teachers in order to help get beyond simply focusing on worksheets and worrying about the right answer, so that they can create engaging environments for all students, said Ban Har. For that to happen, teachers themselves need to develop deeper understandings of important math concepts, and working with SDE on the Beyond the Basics institutes is one way achieve this.

Ban Har is the director of curriculum and professional development at Pathlight School, an autism-oriented K10 school in Singapore, and the principal of Marshall Cavendish Institute, a global teacher professional development institute. Before taking on those roles, he taught at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore for more than 10 years.

The new book Singapore Math: Think Outside the Computation Box, co-written by Ban Har and SDE executive Lorraine Walker, will be available for purchase in August. Walker is a former mathematics teacher who traveled to Singapore to observe how mathematics was taught in that country, has authored several books and trainings, and has become one of the top U.S. experts on Singapore Math. Written for classroom teachers, math coaches and special education teachers serving grades three and up, Singapore Math, priced at $ 31.95, will be published and distributed by Crystal Springs Books, the publishing imprint of SDE.

The book contains a series of surprisingly simple, leveled activities that start with basic math understandings and offer new, engaging and fun ways to help students learn to think in new ways in the classroom and beyond.

Singapores approach to math aims to develop students intelligence and 21st century skills, especially creativity and problem solving, said Ban Har. The book is essentially a sort of brain gym to build these skills. You can meet students wherever they are and advance them to the next level so that theyre not just ready for the Common Core curriculum but also a numerate life beyond the classroom.
