The Development International Nairobi YouthWorx Program 2004!

(PRWEB) September 1, 2004

Development International is proud to announce the successful completion of our first annual YouthWorx program, which trained ten disadvantaged youth from Nairobi in computer hardware, software and networking. The 2004 YouthWorx program took place in Nairobi, Kenya, with the support of the University of Nairobi’s Upper Kabete Campus. Local organizations, including the Kibera Community Youth Programme and Kicoshep, helped identify ten high-potential students to participate in the program. Many of the students were children of single parents living in particularly disadvantaged neighborhoods in Nairobi.

During the program, which took place from August 9 through August 25, the YouthWorx students installed five computers at the University of Nairobi, learning about each aspect of the computer as they completed the installation. Hands-on lessons involving CPU hardware, computer peripherals, Windows OS, MS Office, and the Internet allowed students to understand how computer equipment functions and how to use the computer in a personal and professional context. Through the hands-on lessons, each YouthWorx student has created a webpage, an email account and a resume to use in future ICT job applications.

Nairobi’s ICT and nonprofit communities celebrated the students’ achievements at the Ribbon-cutting and Awards Ceremony, hosted by Development International and the University of Nairobi. At the ceremony, plaques were unveiled commemorating YouthWorx’s most generous supporters and each student received a certificate in recognition of their computer proficiency.

Development International would like to thank our generous supporters, our local partners at the University of Nairobi and the volunteers from KenCell Communications for making the Nairobi YouthWorx program such a success.
