Premium Nets Soar in Q4 ’10: Surprising Twists for Showtime, Starz and HBO

(Vocus/PRWEB) March 14, 2011

Despite predictions that the sluggish economy would hamper the growth of network giants like Showtime, Starz and HBO, things are looking up in general as SNL Kagan’s 4th quarter 2010 Premium Network report is released today.

Showtime saw a leap from 17.7 million subscribers in 2009 to nearly 19.5 million at the close of 2010. Starz also realized significant growth, continuing a consistent upward climb through recent years. HBO remained relatively steady, amid industry speculation that the end of its acclaimed series Sex and the City and The Sopranos would leave subscribers pining over the iconic casts and signal a sharp slump in subscribers for the Time Warner network. At this time, HBO still holds first place in terms of net subs, with significantly more subs than the other premium networks, although Showtime, TMC and Starz are all rapidly approaching 20 million.

“Going forward, some aggressive marketing campaigns and more attention to the category in general from operators could generate significant numbers in the next year,” remarked SNL Kagan Senior Industry Analyst, Deana Myers. “Also at play is original programming, which appears to be helping maintain — and possibly growing — subs, including top series like Showtime's "Dexter," HBO's "True Blood" and Starz's "Spartacus."
