Greenplum Introduces Free Greenplum Database Edition for Data Analysts

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) October 19, 2009

Greenplum Software, the pioneer of Enterprise Data Cloud™ solutions for large-scale data warehousing and analytics, today announced general availability of Greenplum Database - Single-Node Edition. This new, free version of Greenplum Database gives data analysts access to Greenplum's high-performance database for large-scale analytical projects outside the enterprise data warehouse (EDW). The Single-Node Edition is a state-of-the-art parallel analytic database, and can participate as a distributed node of Greenplum's Enterprise Data Cloud -- allowing centralized management, data discovery and data sharing across databases.

Other features of Greenplum Database - Single-Node Edition include:

Unlimited production usage on a single commodity x86 server using up to 2 CPU sockets (and unlimited CPU cores), or in a single virtual machine using up to 8 virtual CPU cores.
Fully parallel SQL and MapReduce processing leverages multi-core parallel-processing engine for every query.
No storage capacity cap - from GBs to 10s of TBs.
Hybrid row and column-oriented processing.
Free community support as well as a low-cost, paid support option.
Ability to expand beyond Single-Node Edition to a multi-node massively-parallel Greenplum Database deployment.

Greenplum Database - Single-Node Edition taps into a growing trend: a new class of elite data analysts working outside the EDW, pushing the envelope with new techniques and huge volumes of raw data. In fact, according to the recent MAD Skills survey of more than 400 data warehousing professionals by Greenplum and B-Eye-Network, companies are now conducting the majority of analytical projects outside the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Over half of respondents said that all the data their team needs does not make it into the data warehouse, and more than 75% are using tools such as SAS, Excel and MySQL to work with their data. The majority also said that they prefer to work with "raw" rather than "clean" data.

"This study shows that while the enterprise data warehouse continues to serve the vital function of being a 'single version of the truth' for historical business reporting, it often falls short when it comes to providing analysts with the capabilities they really need to achieve business insights," said Ron Powell, CEO of B-Eye-Network. "At the same time, we're seeing the emergence of a new class of power users who prefer to work with raw data and are eager to push the envelope with new analytical tools. When the EDW doesn't meet their needs, they work outside of the existing data infrastructure to get their job done. Greenplum's new Single-Node Edition is a great fit for these elite practitioners."

"There aren't enough good, free, terabyte-scale analytic DBMS in the world. Greenplum Single-Node Edition is a valuable addition to the list," said Curt Monash, president of Monash Research. "For example, most data warehousing users should find that the free Greenplum offering beats open source PostgreSQL in performance, packaging, and analytic functionality alike."

"While our competitors have focused on making incremental improvements to yesterday's centralized data warehousing infrastructure, Greenplum has forged a new path towards a distributed and connected, private cloud-based environment," said Scott Yara, president and co-founder of Greenplum Software. "We're proud to be able to put our new Greenplum Database Single-Node Edition in the hands of thousands of data analysts, and accelerate the adoption of our Enterprise Data Cloud architecture for data warehousing and analytics."
