GAIEF Hosts Event to Promote Careers in the Apartment Industry

Stockbridge, GA (PRWEB) January 7, 2011

The event, held December 15th at the DeKalb Technical College Conference Center, was attended by more than 150 pre-screened job candidates and featured presentations from some of the State’s industry, education and economic development leaders. Attendees were also given a chance to network with potential employers and were provided with practical advice on pursuing a profession in one of the State’s booming sectors.

Jerry Warshaw, GAIEF Chairman, opened the event by providing a brief overview of the apartment industry and its economic significance to the State; Jenny Williams, Director of Programs for the Technical College System of Georgia, also spoke on the role of Georgia’s technical colleges in training a highly skilled workforce. After a brief video produced by the National Apartment Association Education Foundation (NAAEI), John W. Williams, Director of Talent for Post Properties then gave an in-depth overview of maintenance positions. Attendees also heard from 13 industry professionals representing some of the Atlanta area’s most prestigious apartment owners, managers and operators.

Mia Pressley from the DeKalb Workforce Development, and Marc Hannon White, Atlanta Regional Commission, also provided attendees with instructions on how to connect with participating companies. Richard Smith, Vice President of Economic Development for DeKalb Technical College, then gave an overview of existing educational opportunities to help interested applicants prepare for careers in the apartment industry. Attendees were also able to network with presenters and distribute their resumes at the event.

“Economic vitality is a result of employers connecting with a skilled workforce that offers top-tier service to consumers and, in our case, that service is to renters all across Metro-Atlanta. This initiative represents a win-win-win and we intend to model it across the entire State,” said Dr. Debbie Phillips, Executive Director of GAIEF.

GAIEF would like to recognize the following presenters who made this event truly remarkable: Alan Walsh (AIMCO); Brian Baker (AIMCO); Kareem Slater (Columbia Residential); Frank Verdi (ECI Group); Tice Vieira (First Communities); Tracy Bowers and Adrian Danila (Greystar); Justin Marshall and Desmi Rice (JLC Southeast); Zack Alexander (Lane Company); Keith Gibson and John W.
