Cascadia Labs Asks “Which Consumer Endpoint Security Suite Would You Invite Over to Dinner?”

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) August 21, 2009

Starting in late summer and extending into fall, security companies release their new consumer endpoint products to the market. This year one of the first out of the gate is Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. Cascadia Labs has just released its initial report on the Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 suite and found that Kaspersky is off to a fast start. Compared to five other consumer endpoint security suites currently available, Kaspersky showed the best overall performance, scoring best in on-access and on-demand scan performance, and using small amounts of memory.

The Hippocratic Oath tells doctors to first do no harm. People should expect the same from their endpoint security suites. Of course, security software needs your computer's CPU and memory to run, but some products are better than others in politely protecting you without becoming unwanted guests.

So how can endpoint security software be polite?

Don't slow down the computer boot time - no one likes waiting longer than necessary to start using the computer
Don't steal large amounts of memory from other applications - this slows down their operation
Don't introduce noticeable delays when opening documents
Finish CPU-intensive tasks such as full system on-demand scans as quickly as possible
When possible, do work when the computer is not being actively used
Polite operation is the benefit people gain from software that has been designed to perform well and stay out of the way.

In the non-stop arms race against the ever-changing threat landscape, we can count on endpoint security companies to introduce new features and capabilities, but let's make sure they do it politely.
