Winegard Joins Z-Wave Alliance to Broaden New iCON? Home Control Wireless Remote System?s Interface Capabilities

Winegard Joins Z-Wave Alliance to Broaden New iCON™ Home Control Wireless Remote System’s Interface Capabilities

Burlington, Iowa (PRWEB) March 27, 2006

At the EHX trade show in Orlando and at Satellite Expo 2006 in Atlanta, Winegard will be previewing its newest product line, the iCON Wireless Remote Home Control System, to installers, integrators, remodeling contractor and builders. While there are a few remote systems on the market that encompass some of the elements of the new iCON system, none of them achieve the iCON’s level of integration at Winegard’s anticipated price point. Lance Beck, New Product Development Manager for Winegard’s Signal Distribution Business Group and inventor of the iCON concept and technology said, “Already being a member of the Zigbee Alliance, we have now joined the Z-Wave Alliance, resulting from our commitment to broaden the iCON’s ability to interface with all types of control and automation devices in advance of the release of the iCON this year. Just as the Zigbee association emphasizes an open global standard for wirelessly networks, monitoring and control, Z-Wave, is an open consortium of more than 125 manufacturers who build products based on the Zensys’ Z-Wave as the standard for wireless home control products.”

In adding the iCON seamless interface home control to its new product line for 2006, Winegard has taken all of the intelligence of a high-end remote control system and incorporated it in this new package. It allows each television in a home to become the visual part of the user interface. The remote control becomes the input device. iCON allows users to send the entertainment they want, remotely, where they want it, when they want it. It offers a user-friendly setup with customized TV menus for color and content. It was designed with open architecture for user identified expandability. The remote also functions as a normal remote (volume control, channel selection, etc).

Bob Howell, Director Signal Distribution/Off-Air Antenna Business Group at Winegard said, “To use the iCON, simply stand in front of any TV in the home and press one menu button on the iCon remote. A menu is displayed on the screen or in a PIP window. From the user menu, select the desired control function, using the up/down/select buttons on the remote. Then, a user can open the control interface, which allows control of anything that is controllable, within and outside the home. The remote control itself needs no infrared code database or learning capability. All this functionality is contained within the iCON CPU as a stand-alone product or as an integrated part of the new HOME RUN™ Triple Play Bundle one wire signal distribution system.”

The CPU box can execute a single command or a series of commands to perform the desired function. Once a function is selected, the CPU box becomes an I/R code “translator”. If a user is watching a DVD and presses pause on the remote, the CPU will send the proper I/R code to the DVD player, no matter where it is located on the home network. The iCON communicates with other iCON systems, as well as other control systems for distributed home control.

Winegard had integrators in mind when the iCON system was designed. Winegard’s philosophy for the iCON design is to allow interconnectivity with everything that is ZigBee and Z-Wave controllable, along with Ethernet and RS-232, such as media servers, alarm systems, lighting controllers, HVAC systems and much more. It will be offered in several different configurations ranging from a consumer model, to an advanced systems integrator model, with an anticipate release date in the third quarter of 2006.
